To All West Berkshire Libraries Customers
Welcome to our April news!
With the school Easter holidays about to start, we’re pleased to tell you that you will find activities for children in all of our libraries. There’s always something to enjoy! Please ask in your local library to see what’s available near you.
Thatcham Library will once again be offering additional opportunities for children over 5 years to create some imaginative buildings with LEGO. Drop in between 10.30am and 12pm on Tuesday 12 or Tuesday 19 April to join the fun. Please note that parents or carers will need to stay with children under 8.
2022 marks 120 years since the publication of the much loved children’s book ‘The tale of Peter Rabbit’ by Beatrix Potter. Hungerford Library will be celebrating this with a special rabbit-themed craft session for children on Tuesday 12 April, 10am-12.30pm. Drop in if you can, but if you can’t make that date you can collect a craft pack from the library to try at home.
Thatcham Library will be holding other Peter Rabbit activities for children 3+ years on Friday 22 April, 10.30am-12pm. This will include a chance to hear some of the Peter Rabbit stories.
Theale Library has a ‘rabbit hunt’ running from Monday 11 to Friday 22 April, with Easter prizes for anyone who finds the hidden characters. More information in the library.
Keep a look out for Peter popping up in other libraries too and celebrate with us!
Younger readers can now pick up one of our colourful character bookmarks when they borrow a book from our libraries. They can then start collecting ‘stars’ for their bookmark with every book they read.
We have certificates for anyone who collects 10 stars and becomes a star reader! Read alone or with other family members. Audiobooks count too.
Get Berkshire Active is running chair-based exercise classes at Theale Library on Wednesdays, 3.30-4pm. These free sessions are ideal for building strength, suppleness and stamina, as well as providing an opportunity to socialise with others. They are open to all ages and are especially suitable for older and disabled adults or anyone who might not have been active for a while.
To book a session, please ring Kate on 07706 357801 or email kate.wiggins@getberkshireactive.org.
Spring is the perfect time to start something new. Whether you are looking for fresh ideas or hints and tips for gardening, painting or recipes for picnics, we have a book for you. We’ll be featuring some of them during our New Skills Week on Instagram. Follow @WBerksLibraries during the week starting 18 April so you don’t miss a post!
Throughout April we will have book-related online crafts for children every weekend as usual, with a special spring-themed craft activity over the Easter weekend. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to see what’s happening.
Did you know that you can use your library card to access daily and weekly newspapers from across the world? We subscribe to PressReader, which includes over 7,000 digital newspapers from over 100 countries. Find details about this and our other e-resources on our website.
Saturday 23 April is World Book Night, an annual celebration of books and reading. In connection with this, The Reading Agency is hosting an evening at The British Library at which a number of authors will be talking about their own work and the books that helped to shape their lives. For anyone who would like to attend but can't get to London, tickets are available to watch this event in a simultaneous online broadcast or on catch up for 48 hours. For more details, please follow the link below.
All West Berkshire libraries are closed on Bank Holidays, including Good Friday and Easter Monday, but will be open as usual on Saturday 16 April. Don’t forget that many of our digital services are also available 24/7, so that you can continue to enjoy reading with us every day of the year.
We hope to bring you our next newsletter in early May. Meanwhile please follow @WBerksLibraries on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to keep up with latest news about all that’s happening in our libraries.
