Waste less this Christmas!
Did you know it is estimated an extra 30% of waste is produced over the festive period? If you are cooking for people this Christmas, make sure your food doesn't go to waste by:
- Only buying what you need.
- Checking the use by dates.
- Seeing if you can freeze anything you won't use in time.
- Getting creative in the kitchen with any leftovers.
- Keeping your fridge cool between 0-5 degrees centigrade, this can help make your food last for longer.
It's easy to reduce your waste over the festive period, from the wrapping paper you use, to the food you cook. Check out our webpage for easy swaps and tips you can make!
We all need a break over Christmas including our fantastic Veolia collection crews, so we will be collecting your recycling and rubbish on different days to normal over Christmas and New Year.
You should have received a bin hanger with the revised collection dates on but just in case you need a reminder, we've included them below. You can also find collection day information online here.
In January we will collect your real Christmas tree for recycling. Please make sure you remove any lights, decorations and pots. Trees over 4ft must be cut in half.
You don't need a garden waste subscription to recycle your real Christmas tree, just pop it out with your other recycling!
Please don't leave your tree by your recycling boxes/bags if you do not want us to collect it. Christmas trees are composted at our facility in Padworth.

Batteries placed into bins can be a fire hazard. Please make sure batteries are recycled in the correct place. Why not switch to re-chargeable batteries where you can to help reduce waste!
You may have finished your Christmas shopping (hopefully!) but don't forget that you can use our Shop Local, Shop Green magazine to continue buying more sustainably in the New Year.
The bumper edition has a magnificent collection of eco-friendly local businesses to shop with while looking after our planet. Plus there are some special discounts available too! Let’s support our local green businesses.
Does your business want to invest in green initiatives to help reduce your carbon footprint?
We are delighted to announce that businesses in West Berkshire may now apply for grants from a new scheme called the Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) Challenge Fund, which aims to support environmentally friendly economic recovery and growth.
Whether you are a sole trader or a limited company, you can apply for grants ranging from £5,000 to £25,000. The funding will be paid upfront towards projects that will help your business to recover and grow in an environmentally friendly way, as well as to help with digital improvement.
We’re excited to see innovative, high-impact proposals from businesses. Some examples could include new equipment and building improvements (e.g. LED lighting, improved insulation or the installation of renewable energy technology).
Businesses must submit a full proposal in line with the Council’s eligibility criteria before the deadline on 13 February 2022. This will be followed by a review and payment period in March 2022.
During November, we constructed a new length of footway in Ufton Nervet to provide better pedestrian access to Sulhamstead and Ufton Nervet Primary School.
We want to help encourage our residents to walk, bike, and scoot where possible to reduce vehicle use. Projects like this both encourage and enable children to walk to and from school safely. Reducing car journeys around schools also helps to improve air quality.

The Public Rights of Way Team has organised a number of surface improvements to the network this year. We hope these will be enjoyed by the increased numbers of people out and about in the countryside as a result of the pandemic.
The photo shows our work on Enborne Footpath 19, which is part of a promoted recreational route, running from Church Lane to Skinners Green. This is one of several footpaths that have been part of the project.
We are introducing a new online registration scheme for access to our Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), replacing the current paper permits with a digital system. Online registrations are now open but paper permits, including green car permits that have already expired, will continue to be accepted until 28 February 2022.
The digital permit system will enable households to register and update their vehicle details, household addresses and contact details instantly, allowing for seamless entry into the Household Waste Recycling Centres, so long as you have booked an appointment.
