Our Giving Tree is back and we need your help to wrap up Christmas for those in need and provide gifts for victims of domestic abuse and their families.
Last year, the Giving Tree truly gripped the hearts of local people and we received an overwhelming 187 presents!
This year, the Giving Tree has extended its branches to include trees at Newbury, Theale and Hungerford Libraries. You can get involved in the gift of giving online too.
Please give generously. Your gift can make a world of difference to families that had to leave their homes with absolutely nothing in order to be safe.
This Christmas we want to remind our Care Home residents and staff that we will be thinking of them over the festive period. Last year, your cards, letters and drawings brought smiles to their faces and we want to do this once again. To get involved, simply write a card, letter or drawing and post it to one of our three care homes. Or you may have a care home or neighbour near you who might enjoy some Christmas post?
You can go online to find the addresses for the West Berkshire Council Care Homes (Birchwood, Willows Edge and Notrees).
We’re back with our final Ask Lynne session of the year and this time round we will be discussing and answering your questions on adult social care.
Tune in to our live event on Tuesday, 14 December with Council Leader Lynne Doherty and Paul Coe, our Service Director for Adult Social Care.
You can submit your questions in advance by email by Wednesday 8 December.
The event will be streamed live on our YouTube channel.
We’re currently seeking new foster carers who can offer short breaks to families of children with either physical disabilities, learning difficulties or mental health needs. If you have experiences in medical or caring roles, are compassionate, patient and wish to develop your skills, you could make a great Short Breaks carer! Your time could allow parents of these young people a well-earned rest while you take care of their loved one.
If you feel you could take on a new challenge like Short Breaks, please get in touch with the Family Placement Team on 01635 503155 or fostering@westberks.gov.uk.
An online information session about Short Breaks will be held at 6pm on Tuesday 7 December. If you would like to attend please email the team using the email address above and the Zoom link will be sent to you.

We've recently launched two new blogs to discuss issues which are important both to us and to residents.
- Join Sue Halliwell, our Executive Director for Place, as she writes about her journey to becoming a net zero family. Along with stories from other West Berkshire Council colleagues, we'll be writing about the reality of going green and show how residents can join us on our way to becoming a carbon neutral district. Find our Environment blog here.
- In our new Forward Together blog councillors and senior officers will be sharing their views on topical issues in West Berkshire and beyond. In the first post this week Council Leader Lynne Doherty looks at what we can do to encourage more women into politics.
Our Let’s Get Active Fund is still accepting applications from local community groups.
There is almost £9,000 still to be awarded to groups wanting to improve access to physical activities in West Berkshire. Applications can be made online.
Launched earlier this year, more than £33,000 was made available jointly with Greenham Trust with priority given to activities supporting those most impacted by the pandemic. Funding has already been awarded to a variety of exciting new projects including funding for Educafe to run weekly chair yoga sessions; Reading Rockets, a new children’s community basketball hub in Theale; netball equipment for Kintbury Jubilee Centre; funding for West Berkshire Muslim Centre to run weekly football and CrossFit sessions; equipment for Kintbury Bowling Club and more.
