A group of our Young Carers took part in an accredited Young Leaders Course. The course was run in conjunction with Get Berkshire Active and the Community Youth Project.
The course provided numerous opportunities for positive assessment, which is used constructively and deliberately to build self-confidence, self-esteem and personal self-worth for young people. It improves skills in decision making, problem-solving, planning, assertiveness and self-control.
One participant commented:-
“This course really opened my eyes and made me see more than just one thing at a time; I feel much more positive about school and am more able to deal with any problems”
We're really pleased to announce that we have been given the opportunity to run another course for more of our Young Carers aged 15 +. If you are interested in enrolling in this amazing opportunity then please email us.
Newbury Rotary Club kindly donated a variety of Rock Band equipment for Young Carers. We have been in talks with Maestro’s and are pleased to announce that from September 2021 A music teacher will be attending the Weekly Thursday Youth Clubs at Greenham Community Centre to support our Young Carers to learn to play these instruments. If you would like further information regarding this then please contact nell.knight@westberks.gov.uk

Community Youth Project (CYP) and West Berkshire Council Career and Participation team are setting up a Community Larder in Greenham Community Centre. The Community Larder will help individuals and families to gain access to affordable and nutritional groceries. Community Larders are non-means-tested, so anyone who wants to prevent food waste and/or save money can join and gain access to surplus groceries. For an individual this could mean savings of up to £400 per year on their weekly shop. The community larder will be open from the 27th of May 2021 from 1pm to 4pm at Greenham Community Centre.
Around 6.5 million people in the UK are carers, looking after a parent, partner, child or friend. A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health problem or who needs extra help as they grow older.
Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and their communities.
Join in the conversation online using #CarersWeek.

Please see information below regarding the Covid-19 vaccination programme offered to Young Carers aged 16 plus.
ADASS, the Care and Health Improvement Programme, and the LGA have produced a concise update of vaccination routes for unpaid carers.
Following changes made at the end of March, carers who do not already have a letter of invitation from the NHS can no longer access vaccination through the National Booking Service. The access route is now through GPs, so they are being encouraged to register and ask to be identified with a carer flag.

Please ensure your registered GP are aware of your Young Carer status.
We do not have official names for our Young Carers Groups. Thus far the two groups have been known as ‘The Older Group’ (secondary school aged) and ‘The Younger Group’ (primary school aged). We want to hear your suggestions for a new group name to be used instead.
We also welcome any feedback about the activities on offer. If there is anything else Young Carers would like to see included in our weekly groups, or activity programmes we would love to hear from you! You can email us with your suggestions.
If you know a young carer who could benefit from support from West Berkshire Young Carers please complete an online referral form.
