Have a 'green' Christmas and a waste Free New Year!
While it may be a different Christmas and New Year for most people this year, we are expected to produce an extra 3 million tonnes of rubbish in the UK during the festive season. Have a 'greener' Christmas and follow our top tips to recycle your waste.

Get food savvy this Christmas - Before you go shopping make a list and check what you already have in the cupboard.
Check your dates - Did you know you can freeze food right up until it's use by date? If you aren't going to eat all the cheese you've bought, pop it in the freezer for another time.
Don't let food go to waste - Made too much gravy? Pour any left over gravy into a ice cube tray and freeze ready for your next roast dinner.
Love Food Hate Waste have lots of excellent advice to help you make the most of your food!

If you have old Christmas cards, there are plenty of recycled crafts you could try and make. From gift tags to Christmas decorations - why not have a go at making a recycled bauble garland!
1. Cut your Christmas cards into 5cm circles and then fold each circle in half.
2. To create each bauble for your garland, glue each half of circle to another half circle (back to back). To make a 'bauble' it takes 5 circles.
3. Thread string through the middle of the bauble and add as many baubles to your garland as you like! Share your designs with us on Facebook!

Have you received lots of cardboard packaging from online deliveries or new gifts over Christmas?
Pass it on - Check local online sites as people often want large boxes for moving house.
Reuse - Use the packaging for something else. Brown paper used for packaging by some online retailers can be reused to wrap gifts, maybe add a ribbon or ask children to decorate the paper?
Recycle - If you run out of space in your green box for card and paper, you can also leave large cardboard next to it. Just make sure you flatten and fold it to a smaller size.
Remember you can also recycle glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, aerosols, paper, cans and tins in your green boxes and bag. For other materials check what is accepted for recycling at our recycling centres or mini recycling centres.

Try alternatives to wrapping paper this year. Gift bags or boxes can be reused time and time again and off cuts of material can make presents look beautiful under the tree.
Unfortunately we can't recycle wrapping paper that contains foil, plastic or glitter so choose recyclable paper or use brown paper with string and plastic free tape?
To check if your wrapping paper can be recycled give it the scrunch test! If the paper unfolds back, it contains plastic or foil and sadly cannot be recycled. It the wrapping paper remains in a scrunch ball, it's good for recycling.

If you are thinking of doing a pre-Christmas clear out, advertise your items on sites like Freecycle or local online groups to give your unwanted items a new home.
You can also pick up some second hand toys or clothing in great condition, ideal for Christmas gifts!
If you receive a gift you don't need or want why not try a gift swap with a friend or donate it to charity?

We all need a break over Christmas including our fantastic Veolia collection crew, so we will be collecting your rubbish and recycling on different days to normal over the Christmas and New Year time.
You should have received a bin hanger with the revised collection dates but just in case you need a reminder, you can also check them online. All collections will be back to normal on 18th January 2021.

After Christmas from Monday 4 January until Friday 29 January we will collect real Christmas trees for recycling. Please make sure you remove any lights, decorations and pots.
You don't need a garden waste subscription to recycle your real Christmas tree, just pop it out with your recycling!
Please don't leave your tree by your recycling if you do not want us to collect it!
