Our new Community Municipal Investment has already achieved over half of its £1 million target. This is great news as the CMI is a key part of our strategy to build a greener future and help our recovery from Covid-19. More than 400 people have already invested; if you are one of them your money is working hard for us and for you, with solar panel installations on six community buildings almost completed. The investment is still open - we're using the funds for tree planting, cycleways and other projects to help deliver a zero carbon future. Find out how you can be a part of West Berkshire’s green recovery.
We're supporting this year's Great British September Clean.
The campaign, usually known as the Great British Spring Clean, was delayed this year due to Covid-19 and will now take place from 11 - 27 September. It will see volunteers from across the country take part in litter picks to help protect the environment and keep it tidy.
Communities across West Berkshire come together to do their bit. We're encouraging residents to take part in the campaign - this year coronavirus advice is available to help you stay safe whilst litter-picking.
Can you spare some time to take part in the campaign? Here's how you can get involved:
Visit the Great British September Clean website for more information about the campaign and how to be involved.
A new Environment Delivery Team has been created to help deliver a programme of activity in support of our new Environment Strategy.
The new strategy, which was adopted last month, follows the declaration of a climate emergency last year and will help the Council deliver on its priorities to protect and enhance our green district and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
The team of seven will work with services across the Council, as well as partners and local people, on a range of green projects. They are already working on a variety of projects including creating new wildflower verges, solar projects, as well as energy-saving schemes and much more. We'll tell you more about their work in future newsletters - watch this space!
We’re updating another 17 of our traffic lights to LEDs. The upgrades are part of our Environment Strategy and mean that the traffic lights will last up to 15 years longer, save 38,200 kWh of energy and 21 tonnes of carbon annually helping us to get closer to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
West Berkshire has 86 traffic signal sites across the district, 46 of these are currently LED and we plan to up this to a total of 66 by the end of the year and to phase out ‘traditional’ light bulbs as soon as possible.
