Supporting children and young people with medical conditions and allergy
Last month the Government published draft guidance for governing bodies of maintained schools and proprietors of academies in England. The guidance sets out what schools need to do to ensure children with medical conditions, from asthma to diabetes, allergies, to breathing support to rare conditions, can safely attend school, go on trips, access lessons, eat lunch, and use the toilet when they need to.
The consultation is asking for views on:
- Requiring every setting to have a published medical conditions policy,
- Strengthening the use, development, review and standardisation of Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs).
- Introducing clear expectations on recording, reporting and learning from serious incidents and “near misses” relating to children and young people with medical conditions (including allergy).
- Introducing a new requirement for a separate, published allergy safety policy,
- Expanding the scope of the duty to “make arrangements for supporting pupils with medical conditions” to include further education and post-16 institutions, non-maintained special schools, and independent schools.
