Welcome to the start of a new academic year
We hope you have enjoyed the summer holidays and the glorious weather!
We have lots of events planned for this year including a weekly SEND Surgery at Cherry Street SEND and Sensory Hub, and Life Skills sessions for young people in partnership with Barclays Bank PLC also at the SEND and Sensory Hub. We have our usual selection of online training workshops and will be attending lots of community events. IASS weekly SEND surgery
SEND Life Skills Session
IASS in collaboration with Barclays Bank offers our 'SEND Life Skills Session' for young people aged 14 to 25 years old. The session will cover money skills and online safety.

SEN support workshop
Parents and carers are invited to join our free webinar 'SEN support- what parents and carers need to know' taking place on Thursday 18 September at 9:30am.
Understand about the graduated approach, the cycle of assess, plan do, review, what SEN Support may include, support for medical conditions, where education providers can source additional guidance, and support available during exams.

Understanding EHC Needs Assessments and Plans
Parents and carers are invited to join our free webinar 'Understanding EHC Needs Assessments and Plans' taking place on Wednesday 5 November at 10:00am.
Gain information on the EHCP process, what happens during an EHC needs assessment and what a good EHCP should contain; from requesting a needs assessment to reviewing an existing EHCP. There will also be an opportunity to ask your questions following the session.

Wolverhampton’s SEND & Inclusion Quality Assurance Framework
Wolverhampton SEND and Inclusion Partnership Board has published a SEND & Inclusion Quality Assurance Framework.
Developed collaboratively with families, SENCOs, school leaders, health teams and commissioned services, the Quality Assurance Framework reflects a shared commitment to inclusion and continuous improvement. It empowers all partners to engage in quality assurance, contribute feedback, and work together to shape better outcomes.

Update on SEND reform autumn 2025
The government plans to release its long-awaited white paper on SEND reform in autumn 2025, detailing new approaches and investments in the SEND system.
The white paper is expected to outline the government's approach to SEND reform including investments in the system and innovative strategies to support vulnerable groups. It will also define expectations for inclusive provision in mainstream settings and emphasize early intervention to prevent unmet needs from escalating. It is a crucial step in addressing the challenges faced by the current SEND system.
IASS will bring you updates as soon as we know more.
New CDC guides to the disability duties in the Equality Act
The Council for Disabled Children has released new guides for schools, colleges and early years providers regarding to disability duties in the Equality Act 2010.
This series of guides to the disability duties in the Equality Act, commissioned by the DfE, alongside new training programmes for schools and early years settings, reflects the importance the DfE attaches to the duties in achieving their vision of a more inclusive future.

Wolverhampton Outreach Service: Parent & Carer training events
For families of children/young people with a diagnosis of autism and those currently undergoing assessment. This workshop will help to develop your understanding of autism and an opportunity to talk to other parents and carers.
If you child finds it difficult to attend school due to emotional or mental health reasons and is on the EBSNA pathway, you can meet other families to share your experience and have your say on what support you would like to be available to parents. Michelle from our IASS team will be in attendance of the event.
For families of children/young people with a diagnosis of autism and those currently undergoing assessment. This workshop will help to develop your understanding of autism and look at some underlying reasons for behaviour.
For families of children/young people with a diagnosis of ADHD and those currently undergoing assessment. This workshop will help to develop your understanding of ADHD and gives the opportunity to talk to other parents and carers.

Wolverhampton SEND Parent Champions Friendship Group
Wolverhampton Outreach Service offers 'SEND Parent Champions- Friendship and Support Group' available to parents and carers of children with Autism and ADHD (no diagnosis needed).
The sessions are an opportunity to meet other families, share experiences, support each other and gain advice. The programme offers small group support, 1:1 mentoring and signposting to other services.
Their upcoming session is on Wednesday 24 September 10:00am at Graisley Family Hub. There is no need to book, but for more information email Rachel at RWatson1@aatrust.co.uk

Free accessible cycling at West Park
Big Top Musical Adventure music sessions
In partnership with Wolverhampton Music Service and Wolverhampton Family Hubs, Big Top deliver a variety of music-making sessions for children and young people with learning disabilities who live, or attend a school, in Wolverhampton.
From September 2025, music sessions will take place at Cherry Street SEND and Sensory Hub on a Wednesday evening.

Autism West Midlands: Upcoming parent and carer webinars
Understand demand avoidance and PDA, nervous system arousal levels and the importance of language communication.
Understand a school's duty in supporting a pupil with SEND needs; including those with medical needs, mental health difficulties and physical disabilities.

'Autism and Me' programme for children aged 8- 12 years
Autism West Midlands offers it's free programme to children aged 8- 12 years with a diagnosis of Autism. The 3 evenings, face to face small group sessions offers your child the opportunity to learn more about their condition, meet other children with similar experiences and gain supportive strategies that can help in their day- to day life.
