Welcome .....

Welcome to the first edition of the Adult Voice and Choice Newsletter.🎃 The newsletter will be released on a quarterly basis and will share the activity that is taking place between the City of Wolverhampton Council and adults living in the City.  We welcome any enquiries and opportunities for working in partnership details of how to contact us can be found at the end of the newsletter.

Adult Voice and Choice Forum 👩‍👩‍👧‍👧

About the AVC Forum....

Established in January 2024, the forum provides a working partnership between CWC and a diverse group of Adults and Community Champions who have lived experience of accessing Adult Social Care or caring for family members or friends. 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦The group have a passion for improving lives in Wolverhampton through co-production and since January the group has grown from 4 members to 17, with up to 12 attending on a regular basis. Initially the group met monthly, however the group now meet twice every month to include an additional social meet up.😀

Since the forum was established, the members have been involved in a number of co-production activities including;

  • developing their own terms of identifying areas within the Local Account. The Local Account report produced by Local Authorities details Adult Social Care in the City, the forum has now renamed the report Adult Voice Matter
  • working with the digital inclusion team to redevelop the Adult Social Care landing page so that it is more user friendly, advised on the format and content of the CWC feedback / complaints leaflet and updated safeguarding leaflet
  • meeting with the Occupational Health team to provide their views on the service and met with many external partners such as the NHS and Voluntary Sector organisations
  • considering the issues that are important to them and have identified that advocacy, safeguarding vulnerable adults, autism, mental health / wellbeing and clear and accessible information will be their priorities for the next 12 months.

The forum meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, currently at Priory Green Community Building in Pendeford. The group welcomes anyone interested in attending, for more information please email Adultvoiceandchoice@wolverhampton.gov.uk

A warm welcome was given to the Adults Senior Leadership Team, who recently, joined for the first-time, members of the Adult Voice and Choice Forum, along with representatives from the Co-production Group for Adults.

It was an opportunity for the group to ask leaders questions about the support the City of Wolverhampton Council offer for adults and find out in more detail about the services provided for adult social care across our city.

in the spotlight

In each issue of the newsletter we will be spotlighting members of the forum or local community to share the valuable role that they have in improving adult social care and improving lives..

Karen

Karen Thorne  - Chair of ADVC

Karen has been a member of ADVC since March 2024. Karen has been volunteering since she was 14 years old and has always been involved in supporting her community and is passionate about mental health  . Karen was a volunteer at The Samaritans for 13 years and in the last 10 years she has volunteered for Creative Support, Starfish and she is currently volunteering at Lee Road Church at their Parent and Toddler Group. Karen was caring for both her parents until her father passed away and she now cares for her mother. Karen joined the group so she could share her experience in a way that would positively benefit Adult Social Care as well as being able to gain information she can share with her networks and community. Karen became the first Chair of the group in June 2024

Marie Lane – Vice Chair of ADVC

Marie has been a member of ADVC since March 2024. Marie is a Community Champion who is actively involved in her local church and runs her local Neighbourhood Watch. Marie also volunteers at local charity Pets and Paws. Marie cared for her brother since she was young, supporting him through many years of mental health challenges. Marie now cares for her husband. Marie has previously volunteered for Outreach Wolverhampton for homeless and vulnerable members of the community and still supports the homeless. Marie became involved in ADVC due to her vast experience in Adult Social Care, with both the community and professionals. Marie values the opportunity to be able to share information with her local community. Marie became Vice-Chair in June 2024.

Darts

Stand up if you love the darts!

Mr Vegas Grand Slam of Darts returns to the city this weekend and there are only a few tickets left, with some sessions already sold out.

The world’s best darts stars are coming to WV Active Aldersley from 9 to 17 November, which sees 32 top stars competing for the Eric Bristow Trophy in an action-packed tournament which begins with a group stage before playing down to a winner from the knockout last 16 onwards.

Due to the popularity of the event, many car parking spaces have sold out; however, a limited number of parking passes are still available. If you are unable to secure a parking pass, consider booking a shuttle bus ticket instead.

Christmas light switch on dates🎄

There will be fun for all the family at a series of events across the city, starting with the city centre switch on in Queen Square on Saturday 16 November.

The festivities start at 3pm with a funfair, real reindeer, face painting, food and drink and much more! Get set for a full afternoon of entertainment that you won't want to miss with the lights switch on as the finale. The Grinch and Cindy Lou will be there entertaining the crowds throughout the event before X Factor and musical theatre star Niki Colwell and Jake Nelson Music take to the stage performing an array of songs.
