Several Education Providers meet with Wolverhampton Safeguarding Together on a quarterly basis. This is an opportunity to raise any emerging issues, highlight any good practice and be kept up to date with the work of the partnership.
Below is a summary of discussions had at the 8th July 2022 Meeting.
Bulletin Summary
It was highlighted that following previous messages in relation to booking DSL training that headteachers are more confident in booking courses and are finding that spaces are available if the courses are booked well in advance. WST would like to continue to push this message, so please share with your Safeguarding / Deputy Safeguarding Leads.

One of the headteachers raised that they did not receive the S175/157 Audit to complete which in turn appeared as though they had not responded which resulted in them having a 'deep dive'. Apologies were given and they have been assured that they will be included in the 2023 audit. Please do let us know if you think that your school has also been missed as part of this process.
Social Workers in Schools programme has been rolled out nationally and funded by the DFE.
12 Schools within Wolverhampton have been involved in the pilot for the last 18-24 months. Feedback from the schools involved is positive and they feel it has really benefited them having a social worker within school. Cardiff University are collating data such as referrals, impact on attendance etc and are evaluating the responses nationally.
An expression of interest to carry on with the pilot for another academic year has been put in to the DFE, Phil Leivers and his team are awaiting a response. If the go ahead is given the idea would be to include additional schools within the pilot.
A Task and Finish Group has been coordinated to look at whether this is something we could develop locally that could go out to all schools across the city – schools will be invited to have their input on any proposed models developed.
Interviews have taken place and an Education Safeguarding Officer has now been appointed. She is due to start work at the beginning of the school term (September) - Her details will be shared with all members once she has commenced in post.
There is still some confusion around how often DSL training is to be refreshed, those within the meeting were asked if there is anything we could do to clear up any confusion - It was agreed that an update will be provided via this group and the DSL / School Post in September as a reminder to all.
Please be aware that Safeguarding Lead training should be refreshed every two years. Please book onto the half day Working Together Update course, safeguarding leads do not have to repeat any of the core courses as all updates are incorporated into this course.
A discussion was also had about whether you feel training should return to face to face training or remain virtual - the opinion of those in attendance was that virtual training works well but it would be worth training for new DSL's to be held face to face. We will take this back to our Learning and Improvement Group for a decision to be made, an updated will be provided at the next Education Providers Meeting.
Your Training Account:
If you already have a training account and are in a position where you have changed roles / school or for any other reason that requires a change in your email address, please can we remind you not to make a new training account. Please contact us on the WSTTraining@wolverhampton.gov.uk email where will be able to support you in updating your existing account - this will prevent loss of your previous course information and certificates and the duplication of accounts as we currently have a high number of these.
The Neglect Strategy has recently been reviewed and updated, this includes learning from our most recent CSPR for Child R. Copies of both can be found below:
On the 21st June we held two briefing sessions to relaunch the Neglect Toolkit as the initial launch was at the beginning of the pandemic and it hadn't been embedded within practice as much as we had hoped for. The briefing session was recorded and can be found on our website along with a useful 'how to' video for completing the toolkit.
The Threshold Document is currently being updated and is due to go for final sign off by the end of September 2022. Once this has been update it will be published on the WST Website and shared with you all.
