Message from Phil Leivers - Head of Service Educational Excellence

Dear Colleagues,

National Tutoring Programme update

Along with the DfE, we are keen to find more information about how schools are using the school led tutoring scheme. We would really appreciate it if you could complete the DfE daily educational setting form each Thursday, please see guidance and links below:

Please record usage of your SLT funding in this week’s educational setting status form, being issued on Thursday 26 May. The DfE have published guidance on how to complete the form which includes the 3 questions on SLT. The individual completing the form should have all the relevant information to hand on SLT use in your school.

An optional tracker and calculator tool has been designed to help schools track SLT information during the academic year.

I appreciate that filling forms in is burdensome, but I am being asked both locally and by the DfE how the school led tutoring scheme is making a difference. I do not want to ask you separately to the DfE.

Best wishes,

Phil Leivers
Head of Service Educational Excellence

Education Inspection Framework (EIF) curriculum roadshows for Early Years settings - West Midlands

Ofsted is running a series of Education Inspection Framework (EIF) curriculum roadshows for Early Years settings. These events will be held regionally across the country, between June and July this year. We intend to run a specific roadshow for maintained nurseries later in the year.

These half-day events will offer the opportunity to learn more about how we look at language and communication at inspection and what we have learnt about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two representatives from your setting are welcome to attend. Each person attending will need to register separately.

Current Ofsted Inspectors (OIs) are asked not to attend this event, as specific training is provided for inspectors separately.

Please note that there is no charge for attending one of these events and spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If you are interested in attending one of these events in your region, please find below details of the date, session times and links for registration.

Reminder about the statutory Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

A reminder that schools must administer the MTC to all eligible year 4 pupils between Monday 6 June and Friday 24 June. Schools are strongly encouraged to administer the check within the first 2 weeks of the check window.

Schools should have already accessed the MTC service via DfE Sign-in. This will allow them to check their pupil register and ensure that all eligible pupils are included and their details are correct. It will also enable schools to generate a school password and pupil identification numbers (PINs) on the days they are administering the try it out check.

It is strongly advised that schools read through the administration guidance and the MTC assessment framework which have been updated for 2022. Page 3 of the administration guidance states that, “Pupils can use the try it out check from Monday 21st March to familiarise themselves with the format, including any access arrangements, before taking the official check. Please also refer to Page 6 of the administration guidance “Preparing for the Check”.

The DfE have also published a helpful leaflet for parents which can be found here.

Please note that an online briefing regarding the Year 4 MTC for all Year 4 teachers and maths leads took place on Friday 8 April, 1.30pm – 3.30pm. To access the recording of this session, please use the link here. To access the slides for this session and other supporting resources, including the key documents mentioned above, please use the link here. Please do not share these links outside your organisation.
