A message from Councillor Simkins,

Cabinet Member for City Economy, on the

Governments Covid Business Grant Support

Cllr Simpkins

Councillor Stephen Simkins, Cabinet Member for City Economy, introduces this weeks newsletter with a reminder about the Government grant support available to businesses,

In total over £11 million has been paid out since November 2020, to support businesses in the city during this challenging time.

Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and we are doing everything we can to make it as quick and easy as possible for them to access the grants available, this includes redeploying staff with appropriate financial systems knowledge from other parts of the council.

Over the course of the pandemic we have ensured thousands of eligible businesses have had quick access to vital funding to help them through this most difficult time. We are ensuring the latest grants are allocated swiftly and that no business is left behind as our city looks to recover from the financial impact of Covid-19.”

I am urging Wolverhampton businesses to head to the business grants web page and find out what funding is available to them. If a business is unsure we are asking that they look at the information on the website which includes a guide to help businesses understand which ones to apply for. Alternatively you can get in touch with the Council by emailing business.grants@wolverhampton.gov.uk or calling the business support phoneline on 01902 290242 between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Thursday or from 9am to 4.30pm on Fridays.

Relight Programme Registration

Working from home

Launched January 2021

We are looking for a further 40 ambitious sole traders or micro businesses in Wolverhampton join the Relight Business Programme in March – the Programme offers a package of intensive support that includes a product, service, market, digital and financial review, along with free membership for a year with either Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) or Black Country Chamber of Commerce(BCCC).

Please click here to register.

40 businesses have already joined and are learning from each other. Be part of the buzz. Here is what Bear from Image Squad Ltd said about the first cohort:

" Finding out about the scheme a couple of weeks ago it has been a breath of fresh air to be involved in something positive during this testing time.

Having attended both of the webinars so far I’m finding that as a small business who is cut off from both clients and freelance staff that being part of the scheme is a positive beacon.  It really is refreshing to talk with someone who shares my optimism opposed to those around me who are of the opinion that it’s time to call it a day due to their lack of ambition and understanding of what it takes to be entrepreneurial.

Too many people are struggling to see a way out of this pandemic, myself included.  However I refuse to accept that today will be the same as tomorrow and that I can start to make changes to ready my business for reopening, whenever that may be. "
