chief executive header 2023

Tuesday 9 May 2023

Colleagues,

As you know, I shall be retiring this year. It has been a privilege and a pleasure being the Chief Executive for such a devoted team at Waltham Forest.

When I took over as Chief Executive in 2010 it was off the back of five chief executives in the previous eight years and many of our core services had been subject to government intervention.

The past 13 years have seen a total transformation of not just the Council, but also the borough - from securing the future of the Walthamstow Wetlands, the excitement of being the Mayor of London’s first-ever Borough of Culture to the pride I felt when in 2019 we were named Local Authority of the Year by The MJ.

This would not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of the wonderful staff, councillors, partners and residents.

There is still so much to look forward to in Waltham Forest including the opening of the Soho Theatre Walthamstow, bringing a new Lido to the borough and the launch of the University of Portsmouth campus to name but a few.

Linzi Roberts-Egan

Therefore, I am delighted to announce that Linzi Roberts-Egan has been recommended for appointment as Waltham Forest Council's new Chief Executive.

Linzi served Waltham Forest residents for many years, before becoming Chief Executive at Islington Council. She brings with her a very impressive track record with what she has achieved in Islington and a strong commitment to our borough - and describes Waltham Forest as having ‘compassionate tenacity’ and a ‘strong resident focus’.

Linzi’s appointment follows a rigorous recruitment process including partners from community groups, a panel of young people, staff, trade union colleagues and councillors from both parties, with the final interview panel led by the Leader, Cllr Grace Williams.

There was a very strong field of candidates which shows the reputation we have built together.

Full Council will be asked to approve this recommendation at their meeting on Thursday 25 May and we will keep you updated following the meeting.

As the longest serving Chief Executive in London, I had the great fortune to work with fantastic Leaders and I would like to thank Cllr Grace Williams, Leader of the Council for all her support.

Everything we have achieved has only been possible thanks to you, my amazing Waltham Forest team and I’ve never been more proud of our work together.

Martin
