Household waste collections
Black bin collections will be changing for some residents from next month.
If you live in a kerbside property (not a block of flats or building with a communal bin), your black bin will soon be collected every two weeks instead of every week. For some residents, this will start the week beginning Monday 24 March, and for others it will be the week beginning Monday 31 March.
Your green recycling bins and food waste bins will still be collected weekly, and brown garden waste bins will still be collected every two weeks.
Every household will receive information through the door about these changes alongside a guide on what should go in each bin. If you’re able to help spread the word by sharing this information with neighbours and local groups, it will help to make the transition as smooth as possible.
These changes are part of our ambition to improve recycling rates in Waltham Forest and to become a net-zero borough. Currently, it’s estimated that around 85 per cent of what is put in black bins could be recycled – we need to do more to recycle all that we can and reduce the amount of black bin waste that cannot be recycled to a minimum.
You can read more about this change on our website.
Joan Salter MBE speaking at the HMD event
On Monday 3 February, we held a special event at the Town Hall to remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust. The ceremony, held in partnership with Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR), featured a moving personal testimony from child survivor Joan Salter MBE alongside readings from representatives at AJR and the Holocaust Educational Trust.
Unfortunately, due to a brief power cut at the Town Hall last week, we were unable to broadcast the event online as planned. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Our sports and leisure partner Better host free activity sessions across the borough as part of the Warm Spaces programme. The warm spaces run from 11am to 1pm each weekday, and hour-long classes include cycling, pilates, aerobics, gym – and even Jenga. No need to book in advance.
The flu vaccine helps protect against flu. If you’re eligible and haven’t had yours yet it’s not too late. You can still get your flu vaccine until 31 March in a local pharmacy, by attending a vaccine clinic or contacting your GP.
Flu can be a serious or life-threatening illness, and thousands of people across England have been admitted to hospital with it this winter. The vaccine gives you the best protection against serious illness, meaning you can spend more time doing the things you love.
