This month we are starting 'Stories of Sanctuary'. These stories are direct from those seeking asylum in our Borough of Sanctuary, as well as the wider community supporting them.
In this first edition, MK uses his own words to share his story of arriving in Waltham Forest.
Stories of Sanctuary: MK's journey

"All I had with me was my bag, as you can see in the photo... [I had] dried fruits of peace that my late grandmother gave me long before the tragic incident. My grandmother used to tell me that “Whatever the difficulties in life, chew them and the sweet taste of this fruit should be the same as the taste in your daily life"."
MK
MK's journey included meeting the council’s Single Point of Contact (SPOC) team and becoming a Board member for I Speak Football, which supports displaced young people in learning English through football.
Update from Ben and Silvia in the SPOC team:
"It has been a busy start to the Academic year for the SPOC team. We have supported 179 students with accessing ESOL as well as adult education classes between August and October at different colleges in Newham and Waltham Forest."
The SPOC service supports refugees and migrants with accessing education, employment and training opportunities. They have provided drop-in services at contingency hotels, hostels and libraries within the borough.

Council Tax Support Scheme consultation now open
The council is asking for views from residents on proposed changes to the Council Tax Support scheme from April 2025, which aims to balance targeting support to those that need it most with introducing a more affordable scheme overall, in the context of difficult financial challenges the Council is facing.
The proposal is for an income-banded scheme which provides up to a maximum of 85% support to people who fall into defined financially vulnerable groups.
For other eligible working-age residents, support would be given up to a maximum of 57%. All support given depends on residents’ level and type of income, their household composition and their level of capital.
Healthwatch Waltham Forest survey
Waltham Forest Council, the NHS and VCS partners are working together to develop community healthcare spaces where GP services, screenings, tests and community services can all be provided in one place.
Healthwatch Waltham Forest is running a survey to make sure local people can help shape these plans. They would like to know how healthcare spaces can support your communities to stay as healthy as possible.
Respondents could be in with the chance to win prizes up to £150.
Immigration documents eVisa changes
The UK Government is replacing physical immigration documents with digital proof of immigration status called an eVisa to demonstrate proof of right to study, work, rent, access public services and claim benefits.

If you think anyone in your network might benefit from this information, please make sure to pass this on, as well as the link to the Government’s website to find out more.
Affected or concerned residents can also visit a Community Drop In for assistance. Community Drop In events take place across the borough from Tuesday to Friday.
