Soho Theatre Walthamstow: meet the artists

Art Without Heroes at William Morris Gallery

Free activities at our youth spaces

So much happening in Waltham Forest for young and old

Easter is just around the corner and I know many of you will be making plans for the holidays already. I want to tell you about some of the activities we've got coming up in the next few weeks to enjoy across the borough.

Our Space4All programme in multiple locations around Waltham Forest offers free sessions for children and young people aged between 11 and 25. They're a great way to make friends, learn skills and hang out in a safe environment. We also have holiday sessions for younger children. These include free meals for eligible children as well as great sports and craft activities. Again, they take place at different locations around Waltham Forest.

We are lucky to have lots of amazing creative and hospitality businesses based in our borough. As someone who's lived here for many years, I love to see how much is going on now, no matter your age. There's an innovative family interactive experience at 228 Chingford Mount, the brilliant new Art Without Heroes Mingei exhibition at William Morris Gallery, and lots of exciting things planned in Leytonstone as part of Spring in The Stone

We try to feature as many events as we can each week in Residents’ News so please do let us know if you are promoting an event, particularly if it’s free.

Cllr Grace Williams, Leader of Waltham Forest Council

This Easter holiday explore how taking the jump to a more sustainable way of living not only helps protect nature, but also helps us lead fuller and more joyous lives. This fun, immersive event will explore the six small behavioural shifts we can all make to protect our Earth. There's lots to look at, play with, learn about and be inspired by, plus special workshops run by local community groups. Pop-in for a party with a difference from Tuesday 9 to Saturday 13 April, between noon and 6pm every day.

Mingei and Morris

We're happy to say that the largest ever exhibition in the UK dedicated to Mingei, the hugely influential Japanese folk-craft movement, has opened at William Morris Gallery.

With works including ceramics, woodwork, paper, toys, textiles, photography and film, the exhibition incorporates unseen pieces from significant private collections in the UK and Japan, along with museum loans and historic footage from the Mingei Film Archive.

The exhibition is free and open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm until Sunday, 22 September 2024.

Loo know it makes sense

A toilet roll with the message that your next poo could save your life on it

If you're aged between 54 and 74 years old in England, you should receive a free NHS bowel cancer screening kit every two years until you turn 75.

It's a way of testing to see if you show early signs of bowel cancer, when treatment has the best chance of working. If you get a bowel screening kit, it’s really important to complete it as soon as possible, even if you feel fit and healthy.

Completing a screening is really easy, just collect a small poo sample and send it back in the packaging provided. The results could be lifesaving.

Always see a GP if you have symptoms of bowel cancer at any age, even if you have recently completed a bowel screening test kit.

CGI of what the path by the flats at Rosebank Villas might look like with planting

We're developing design proposals to transform the area between Walthamstow Central station and the High Street, known as Rosebank Villas. The plan is to create a vibrant, accessible, and green environment to welcome residents and visitors to the borough. It's part of the wider Levelling Up Fund work to establish Walthamstow town centre as a cultural destination.
