Volunteers leading the way in our libraries

Story from a Volunteer: Arzu Senbahar's experience

Arzu has been volunteering with Waltham Forest Libraries since August 2023, and has shared her experience of volunteering:

Volunteering has helped me in many ways. After taking out time from work to raise my family and due to some health problems, I needed to get back into working. I found the opportunity for volunteering at the library on the Waltham Forest website and weekly newsletters that I receive. I enjoy reading and have a passion for books and learning. As the library is local to me it seemed like a great idea. I’m so glad i joined the library for volunteering.

Volunteering has helped me gain a lot of self confidence back, specifically at the library. It has given me the insight to working with the general public. We have a lot of people coming to the library with several different needs.

I gained valuable knowledge and experience involved in the role of a customer service officer/ librarian. The team at Walthamstow library are very kind, extremely helpful and supportive. They have welcomed me since my first day helping them and made me feel valued when I help out.

I would encourage anyone who shares my passion for books to try volunteering at the library.

If you are interested in volunteering in any of our library visit below website.

If Cats Disappeared From The World book cover

We will be featuring a staff pick each month and for this month, Maria, Customer Service & Business Support Officer, has recommended If Cats Disappeared from the World by Genki Kawamura.

About the book

Our narrator’s days are numbered. Estranged from his family, living alone with only his cat Cabbage for company, he was unprepared for the doctor’s diagnosis that he has only months to live. But before he can set about tackling his bucket list, the Devil appears with a special offer: in exchange for making one thing in the world disappear, he can have one extra day of life. And so begins a very bizarre week . . .

Because how do you decide what makes life worth living? How do you separate out what you can do without from what you hold dear? In dealing with the Devil our narrator will take himself – and his beloved cat – to the brink.

Genki Kawamura's If Cats Disappeared from the World is a story of loss and reconciliation, of one man’s journey to discover what really matters in modern life.

Recommendation

If All the Cats Disappeared from the World is a thought-provoking and heartwarming novel that explores the intricacies of life, love, and human connections through a unique lens. Kawamura weaves a captivating story that follows a man facing his mortality and striking a deal with the devil to extend his life. As cats vanish from the world one by one, readers are taken on an emotional journey filled with introspection and poignant moments. This novel beautifully examines the importance of cherishing the little things in life and the profound impact of our relationships with others. With its blend of magical realism and touching storytelling, "If All the Cats Disappeared from the World" is a must-read.

If you would like to place a reservation on this book, you can visit our website, or if you cannot visit one of our libraries' why not place a reservation on Libby.
