Waltham Forest Local Heritage List

We have a wealth of history on our doorsteps here in Waltham Forest, both well-known and hidden, made up of celebrated buildings but also the ones we pass by every day.

The Local Heritage List celebrates the buildings and structures that positively contribute to the local character of the borough, through their historical, cultural, and architectural significance.

A new revised list will be made up of nominations by residents, and can feature almost all types of built structure - from private houses, public libraries, mosques and monuments, shopfronts or schools, factories and fountains. We invite you to have your say on the places you believe are worthy of recognition.

The deadline for nominations to the Local Heritage List is Sunday 28 January 2024.

You can find out more about this project and how to make a nomination in the link below, or keep reading to discover some of the interesting spaces that are already included.

The Drive, Chingford

The Drive, Chingford

The houses on the Drive are excellent examples of the high quality architecture resulting from Chingford’s expansion at the end of the 19th century. Built by the Liberator Building Society in the 1880s as part of the Chingford Rise Estate, the houses are substantial arts and crafts designs with considerable use of timber detailing and spiky rooflines.

Former Francis Road Police Station, Leyton

The former police station is an attractive Modernist building designed by the architect Julian Leathart and constructed in 1939, just before the outbreak of World War II. Features of note include the relief sculptures of police men through the ages around the main entrance.

Vestry House Museum Revitalisation

The Grade-II listed Vestry House Museum in Walthamstow Village is embarking on a revitalisation project to transform it into an accessible and welcoming space for all Waltham Forest residents.

This week they started carefully packing the Local Studies Library and Archive Search Room in preparation for moving to its new home.

Once the fully accessible Search Room reopens in Spring 2024, appointments will be available to residents across the borough to discover more about their houses, family history, as well as access other archive and printed resources relating to Waltham Forest.

We're also excited to see how award-winning architects Studio Weave will transform Vestry House Museum into a heritage space that the whole community can enjoy.

You can follow Vestry House Museum's journey and learn more below. Plus there's still time to see the garden installation, Small Things are Possible by Abel Holsborough, which is on until 18 February 2024. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm.

Make it Happen - Arts & Culture Funding Opportunity

Be Kind Mural

The 2024 round of Make it Happen seed funding opens in January, investing in creative and cultural projects in Waltham Forest. We will be sharing more on this in the new year, and have taken the opportunity to look back at one of the previous recipients, Stoneydown Park Primary School.

They collaborated with local artist Samir Malik to create a mural at the school, bringing students together to celebrate their diversity and creativity. More than just a beautiful addition to the school building, it was an opportunity for the students to work with a celebrated artist and create a lasting artwork together.

✨ Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all ✨

It's been an amazing 2023 and we will be back in the New Year, out and about in Waltham Forest, sharing the great things happening all around the borough with you.
