Remembering victims of war

Two poppies on long green stems

This weekend I, like many of you, will be remembering and honouring people who have lost their lives as a result of war.

This year's marking of Armistice Day on Saturday 11 November, and Remembrance Sunday the following day, will have added poignancy. With wars continuing to be fought on different continents, and daily images of suffering and destruction on our screens, many people here in Waltham Forest are fearful for loved ones caught up in conflict across the globe.

There are events across Waltham Forest to remember the people who've served and died during wartime:

  • Chingford: Sunday 12 November, from 10am
  • Highams Park: Saturday 11 November, from 10.45am
  • Leyton: Sunday 12 November, from 10.25am
  • Leytonstone: Sunday 12 November, from 9.30am
  • Walthamstow: Sunday 12 November, from 10am at the William Morris Gallery walking to Fellowship Square for 10.25am

These services are a chance for Waltham Forest to honour the sacrifices of the past, and stand together as a community today. Please do join us.

This Sunday will also see people across the world celebrating Diwali. Have a very happy time to everyone celebrating here.

Pine for a parklet near you?

A parklet in a residential street featuring a cabinet full of books, a table and chairs and greenery

Applications are now open to create your very own parklet. Parklets are where a parking space is re-purposed for community use – providing place for people to rest or socialise, to let greenery thrive, children play, or lots of other purposes.

You can get support and a grant towards creating a parklet. Find out more about the process and apply below.

Tell your tales of Mornington Hall

A black and white shot of Mornington Hall restaurant with an inset of the current building

The community society CADOS needs your help to uncover the history of Mornington Hall in Chingford as it gets ready to celebrate its 100th birthday next year. The building was a restaurant during the Second World War, was once a school, and is currently home to amateur theatre.

CADOS wants to hear stories about the building from the community. If you know anything about Mornington Hall’s past, or have used or visited the building, get in touch and let them know at morningtonstories@gmail.com.

Tree-mendous!

A man in a high vis jacket plants at tree at Linear Park

Tree-planting season got underway in our borough with the arrival of two elms in Linear Park, Leytonstone on Thursday 2 November. Over the coming months, we'll be planting around 1,200 trees in ten parks and green spaces across the borough – the most in more than half a decade. We've secured around £800,000 for the planting – all to help enhance green spaces and canopy cover in the areas that need them most. Watch our video on X/Twitter.

Improving lives with occupational therapy

The Occupational Therapy team pose together in an office

It's World Occupational Therapy Week, and we are celebrating the impact it can make on local people's lives.

Sharon Heenan recently benefitted from the help of Raylene Winter, one of our occupational therapists, who suggested installing a kitchen trolley, raised toilet seat, and handrails on Sharon's stairs.

Sharon now lives a more independent life and said, “I can't remember how I functioned without her help. It's changed my life drastically.”

You can self-refer for an occupational therapy assessment if you are over the age of 18. Call 020 8496 3000.
