Why not take a walk in the spring sunshine and boost your child’s speech and language skills at the same time?
The scenery is constantly changing, giving you something to talk about.
Here are some ideas to consider as you walk:
-
Take it slow: Notice what your child is interested in and get down to their level to talk about what you see. It might not be what you expect – a hole in the fence, some rubbish, a shiny beetle. Mark these with simple sentences like: ‘oo, there’s a hole’, ‘wow a shiny beetle’.
-
Listen together: Perhaps your child is more interested in what they can hear. Listen to the sounds and use phrases like: ‘it’s an ambulance’ ‘the digger is rumbly’.
-
Take photos: You could take photos of your child’s interests to look through later, show other family members and encourage more chat together.
Check out the Words for Life website for more information.

The current offer of at least two Covid19 vaccinations for everyone aged 5 or above on 31 August last year will end on 30 June 2023.
After 30 June, not everyone will be able to get the Covid19 vaccine from the NHS and eligible people will be informed by their GP or the NHS when they can get the vaccine.
The Covid19 vaccines have saved countless lives, kept tens of thousands of people out of hospital, and helped us to live with the virus without fear or restrictions.
Unfortunately, the virus can still make people very ill, and protection against Covid19 fades over time.
On top of the two main Covid19 vaccine doses, those at highest risk of severe illness from the virus can now get a Spring booster vaccination, on offer up to 30 June 2023.
