Our new job site can help you find work

Between April and December last year we helped 265 people start jobs, supported over 600 businesses and taught 1,830 people new skills – and we want to help even more this year.

Our employment team can connect you directly to vacancies. Whether you are already working and want a change, or are looking to get back into the workplace, we have partnerships with organisations across the borough who offer fulfilling roles, in a wide variety of sectors. You can also look at our new, easy to use Waltham Forest Jobs site

We’re determined to help you make the most of your talents through our fantastic Adult Learning Service, which offers excellent training that many residents can access for free or at a discount. On top of that, we have a successful apprenticeships programme, and you can read about two events next week that could help if you’re looking for an apprenticeship below.

More than 12,000 people run a small business in Waltham Forest and I know many of you read Residents’ News. If that’s you, and you’re struggling with the cost of doing business, check out our business support toolkit to see what help is available. We can signpost you to grants, explore options for cheaper workspace, help you recruit staff, make it easier for you to be greener and much more besides.

Apprenticeships Week job fairs

People talking to representatives from companies at a job fair

Next week we’re celebrating Apprenticeship Week in Waltham Forest. Apprenticeships are a great way for people to get on-the-job training and formal skills at the same time, as well as contributing fresh ideas to their new employer. To celebrate the week, two Jobs Fairs will directly connect residents with employers with jobs to fill:

  • On Tuesday 7 February from 12pm to 4pm, the Construction JobsFest at LASC (Leytonstone), in partnership with Simian, will give access to exciting jobs from 27 employers in one of the fastest-growing industries. Book here.
  • On Friday 10 February from 10am to 4pm, the Apprenticeship JobsFest at Walthamstow Library will focus on apprenticeships. Get access to a wide range of opportunities as well as support creating a CV and job application. Book here.

Find cold spots in your home – for free

caMERA

The Council has some thermal imaging cameras in Leytonstone Library and Chingford Library for Waltham Forest residents to borrow for free.

The cameras, which attach to iPhone or Android mobile devices, show hot and cold spots in your home. Using the images, you can identify areas where you can prevent heat loss through better insulation.

You can also find tips on keeping your home warm on our website.

A tree-mendous giveaway

Two residents pose outside, one is holding a tree sapling in a green plastic bag in one had

Members of the public will be able to collect a free tree at the Aveling Centre, Lloyd Park on Friday 3 February, between 2 and 3pm.

The trees are bare root and between 30cm and 100cm long, so they are easy to transport and will be ready to plant in a Waltham Forest private garden or greenspace (with permission). Hear what some residents had to say on Facebook about picking up their trees at our last giveaway.

The trees can be stored in a cool place outdoors for a couple of weeks if needed, as long as the roots do not get frozen or dried out, but we advise to plant them as soon as possible. Find good planting advice on the Woodland Trust website.

Improving biodiversity and increasing the number of trees in our borough is an important part of Waltham Forest’s plan to tackle the climate emergency.
