Age UK Waltham Forest is holding a programme of free exercise classes across Waltham Forest, including 'Chair Tai Chi' in our libraries. No need to book: just turn up.
- Lea Bridge Library, every Wednesday, 11.45am
- Leyton Library, every Friday, 9.30am
- Leytonstone Library, every Friday, 11.30am
This gentle form of exercise is found to improve health and wellbeing. It helps to loosen and strengthen joints and muscles, improve concentration and intuitive abilities, and can help with blood pressure problems and improving balance.
All classes are free of charge, but if you want to make a donation to Age UK then feel free to do so.
Walthamstow Library has recently hosted hugely successful visits from Stoney Down, Winns and Mission Grove primary schools.
The class from Stoney Down visited the Library to find out about local history, including an hour-long session on the building's changing use and place in the community, from its foundation after a charitable donation from Andrew Carnegie to its crucial use in the Covid Vaccination program.
The class had a guided architecture tour inside and outside, comparing old and new, and finished the visit by exploring the children's library and borrowing books. Many children returned completed library membership applications and were able to join up and borrow their first books.

Waltham Forest Libraries is excited once again to be partnering with the Reading Agency, this time to deliver the Reading Ahead Reading Ahead | Reading Agency programme to our residents. You might be familiar with the Summer Reading Challenge, where we challenge Waltham Forest’s youngsters to read and review six books over the summer holidays. Well, Reading Ahead is a scheme that aims to encourage reluctant adult and young adult readers to improve their confidence when reading. Beginning on Wednesday 10 November, residents will be able to register at Lea Bridge Library and begin to take part. There will be an opportunity to catch up once a month to talk about what you’ve read with other participants, and our Reading Ahead Ambassador, in a relaxed and friendly environment.
Why is this such an important programme? We believe the Reading Agency can provide the best answer.
“Research shows that when we inspire people to read for pleasure they benefit from far greater opportunities in everyday life, education and employment. However, one in six adults in the UK struggle to read. Reading Ahead is the gateway to these opportunities. The programme is designed to help people improve their reading skills and change their perception of reading, opening up opportunities and building their confidence.
What does it involve?
“Reading Ahead challenges participants to pick six reads and record, rate and review them in a personal reading diary - printed or digital. After completing their diary they receive a certificate or digital badge.”
“The programme isn't just about books - newspapers, magazines, poems, websites all count too! The aim is that participants challenge themselves to try something new and discover that reading can be a pleasure in the process.”

As part of feedback on the Lea Bridge Area Framework, you told us you’d like to see more planting and greening introduced locally, and inclusive spaces for the whole community to spend time in.
We’ve listened and used your feedback and ideas to come up with suggestions for how the garden can be improved.
