I know how concerned we all are about the cost of living, and energy prices are due to rise at the end of the month. Although the help announced today by the Government is welcome, the issues causing this crisis run deep and we urge the chancellor to do more to help the most vulnerable in our community. Residents, businesses, and public sector bodies will be eagerly awaiting the details of how the schemes will help them.
Earlier this week, we announced details of our online seminar with local experts from Citizens Advice Waltham Forest and The HEET Project answering your questions on the cost of living crisis. It will take place on Wednesday 5 October from 5.30pm on Facebook.
We’ve already received nearly 40 questions. If you want to know about reducing energy bills, where to ask for assistance if you’re struggling, or how to keep your family fed with healthy, cost-effective meals – we’re here to help. Submit your questions and we’ll try and answer as many as possible. We are putting together additional winter support for those struggling most to be announced in October, on top of what is already available in Waltham Forest.
As we face floods, drought, and record high temperatures we all know that the climate crisis is not an issue of the future but one we must grapple with today. How we reduce, reuse, or recycle our waste will play a part in reaching our target of being net zero by 2030. Waltham Forest currently recycles 32 per cent of its waste and we want to work with every single one of you to improve this.
Today sees the launch of our recycling survey. We want to hear the views of residents on how your waste is dealt with. Read more and take part on the website. We’ve increased the number and type of items we collect - coffee pods, batteries, small electrical items and much more can now be recycled. Here’s a full list what you can recycle in Waltham Forest.
At an Extraordinary Council meeting last night (Thursday 22 September) it was agreed how we will commemorate the incredible legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in Waltham Forest. We will create a new public garden in honour of the late queen in Chestnut Fields, just behind the Town Hall. It will be a place of calm, a place for residents to reflect, a place to take in some peace and quiet – I know it will have a special meaning for so many of us.
Finally, I want to wish local legend Fleur East the best of luck as she prepares to compete in Strictly Come Dancing, starting this evening. The whole of Waltham Forest is behind you Fleur!

This week we launched our recycling survey and we want to hear from as many residents as possible. We want to improve our recycling services and increase the amount of recycling we collect, and we need your views to help us understand how we can do that. In the survey, you will find various options including changing the frequency of bin collections to enable the borough to improve its recycling rate.
Residents are encouraged to consider the four proposals in the survey and have their say on how we increase the amount we recycle on our doorsteps in Waltham Forest. So don’t miss your chance to tell us your views - make sure you complete the survey over on our website.
A free cycle taxi service is helping people in Waltham Forest make greener journeys across the borough.
The electric-assisted cycle taxi is run by Bikeworks, an east London based social enterprise that believes everyone should have access to cycling. A number of taxi rides are available each day for journeys within a three-mile radius of St. James’ Street station in Walthamstow. You can make an online booking or call 0208 980 7998.
Cllr Alistair Strathern and Cllr Kizzy Gardiner invite you to join them at a special surgery at the Leyton Children and Family Centre from 3.30pm next Thursday 29 September.
