Summer starts here

12 May 2022

A message from Cllr Grace Williams, Leader Waltham Forest Council

Summer Starts Here

We can all see the weather is finally beginning to improve and we have been working hard to to get our exciting free events calendar completed to make this summer one to remember.

To kick things off, we’ve got a weekend of events to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and we’ve also had 106 applications for street parties in every corner of the borough. All this on top of an extra bank holiday courtesy of the Queen and her 70 years on the throne.

Over the Jubilee weekend, we’ll have three large scale events in Ridgeway Park, Chingford (Friday 3 June), St John’s Churchyard, Leytonstone (Saturday 4 June) and our 'Mile-long' Street Party along Walthamstow High Street (Sunday 5 June.)

This is just the start of our summer programme and over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing more events you can all enjoy for free. You can find all our free summer events on our website.

High five Highams Park!

Highams Park mural May 2022

A new mural, commissioned by Waltham Forest Council through the Welcome Back fund, has been installed in Highams Park.

‘High Five! Highams Park’ is a vibrant piece celebrating the culture of Highams Park.

Designers Louise Chappell and Becky Bolton said, “It has honestly been the friendliest and most enjoyable mural we’ve ever done.”

Can you spot the local references? Clues include table tennis balls and a concord.

It’s on the Avenue so check it out and read our news story to learn more.

Tuesday 31 May is Family Day at the William Morris Gallery and we're celebrating Carnival. Carnival design was a huge inspiration for Trinidadian Althea McNish, whose work is featured in the gallery's current Colour Is Mine exhibition.

Learn about the history of Carnival in Trinidad and have fun creating your own carnival headdresses to take home with you. We have four time slots available for this activity: 13.00, 13.55, 14.50, 15.45. Don't miss the new family trail around the garden with Fafnir the Dragon. Craft activities are aimed at children aged 6+.

Book your place.

The coffee shop serving up help for Ukraine

Coffee Treasure shopfront

Oksana Levchuk moved to London from Ukraine a decade ago, establishing Coffee Treasure in Highams Park to showcase Eastern European food and drink. Her coffee shop has become a focal point for the local response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

Alongside financial support, Coffee Treasure is accepting donations of food, medical supplies and toiletries to be delivered directly to Ukraine and to refugees displaced by the conflict in neighbouring countries.

A dementia-friendly Waltham Forest

Fellowship Square fountain and Town Hall

On Thursday 19 May, Fellowship Square is hosting an event to celebrate Waltham Forest's accreditation of 'Working towards a dementia friendly borough' from the Alzheimer's Society. There will be a presentation, information stalls and a gentle exercise session.

The William Morris Gallery and Vestry House Museum have been named as Dementia Friendly Venues by the Alzheimer’s Society. The designation is awarded to cultural venues in London that have demonstrated they offer a range of dementia-friendly resources, including clear signage, designated calm zones and staff training.

Stories from the Forest

Thames Magistrates Court

Stratford Magistrates' Court

Walthamstow restaurant fined for health and safety failures

Last week Stratford Magistrates' Court handed down more than £70,000 in fines to Gokyuzu Walthamstow following an incident in which an 8-year-old boy’s hand was trapped in the cutting mechanism of a mincing machine in the restaurant’s kitchen on 7 April 2019.

Deputy leader of Waltham Forest Council, Clyde Loakes said: “This incident has left a young child with life-changing injuries – and all because Gokyuzu Walthamstow failed in their health and safety obligations by removing the safety guard from their mincing machine.

“This case and the punishment given should be a reminder to all businesses of their duties to customers, staff and visitors - we will prosecute those that fail in their duties.
