Residents' News

Walthom Forest

On Wednesday I visited the PL84U AL-SUFFA food bank in Leytonstone to announce a new cost of living support package to help those most in need. Waltham Forest residents can apply for grants of up to £750 per household, for food, transport, debt and relief and other essentials.

We are working in partnership with Citizens Advice to make sure that the people who need it most get the right help quickly. If this sounds like you, or someone you know who is struggling, you can apply by visiting our website.

This support is addition to the £775,000 in support we’ve provided to our food banks during the pandemic, and the £850,000 to cover free school meals this winter.

I have been out and about across the borough hearing for myself the huge concerns many of you have about covering the rising cost of food, heating and other basic costs. I want everyone to know that a range of help is available for those that need extra support.

On Saturday evening I shall be joining people from across Waltham Forest and beyond to take part in the Reclaim the Night March and Rally at Walthamstow Town Square. Urgent action in our society is needed to tackle violence against women and girls. Every new year we reflect on the previous 12 months, one in which saw the deaths of more than 140 women at the hands of men. Much of the change needed is at national level – in our policing, justice and education systems. But our community can take important steps to recognise the impact that violence has on women’s lives and create a zero tolerance approach.

In the coming months the Council will be releasing a Street Harassment reporting app commissioned from Stop Hate UK, to pinpoint areas where women and girls are being harassed by men. This app will be another small step to end this terrible violence against women and girls; I’ll give you more details on this soon.

Thank you and stay safe

Last chance: 15-minute neighbourhood survey

15

The 15-minute neighbourhood is a new way of describing an old concept – it’s a type of urban planning that means everything you need is within easy reach.

It means you can access things like a park, food shop, GP, school, library, community hub, or entertainment venue within 15 minutes of walking, cycling or public transport.

And we need to know what you want more of in your neighbourhood, so we get a clearer picture of how to shape our future.

We've been pushing the 15-minute neighbourhood survey in our Residents News since the start of December, and it closes on Monday - if you haven't had your say yet, now's your last chance!

Get vaccinated

vaccine

It’s important that as many people as possible get the first, second or booster vaccine for long-lasting protection against Covid-19. The vaccines are effective and safe, even for children, young people, and pregnant women.

There’s also a free webinar for pregnant women to ask questions and receive expert advice on the Covid-19 vaccines on Thursday 3 Feb 1-2pm.

In Waltham Forest, it’s never been easier to get your vaccine. There’s a vaccine clinic available on any day of the week and many of them do not need an appointment. But, to guarantee your vaccine, booking is recommended.

Please check each clinic for timings and age limits before you visit.

Changes to the Highway Code from 29 January

chingford

Rules for all types of road users will be updated in The Highway Code to help improve the safety of people walking, cycling and riding horse on 29 January.

A new ‘hierarchy of road users’ explains that those in charge of vehicles that can cause the greatest harm in the event of a collision bear the greatest responsibility to take care and reduce the danger they pose to others.

Face coverings

masks

While face coverings were no longer mandatory from 27 January, we ask that you still use a face covering if you come in contact with other people in enclosed spaces or in crowded places.

The risk of catching or passing on Covid-19 can be higher in certain places and when doing certain activities.

If you meet indoors, let in fresh air when possible. It’s still safer to meet outdoors if you can.

PCR testing

pcr

It is still important that you take a PCR test if you have the main symptoms of Covid-19, even if you test negative using a lateral flow test.

If you have symptoms you should not travel to get a home test but order a PCR test online to use at home and return for your results. If you have already tested positive using a lateral flow test, you do not need to get a confirmatory PCR test unless you want to claim for self-isolation support.

There were still 2,000 new cases of Omicron last week and the variant still has the ability to make those unvaccinated ill.

Reclaim the Night March and Rally

reclaim

The Waltham Forest Reclaim the Night March and Rally has been organised by the Waltham Forest Women’s Network to highlight the issue of women’s safety in the borough. The march and rally have been supported by several local groups from across the borough as part of a growing movement against male violence.

The rally, which is open to everyone, will begin at the Walthamstow Town Square on Saturday 29 January from 6pm.

Two marches for women and children are being organised at the Walthamstow Oxfam on High Street (E17 7LD) from 4.30pm and Leyton Mills (E10 5NH) from 4pm.

Attendees are encouraged to wear masks and to take a lateral flow test before attending.

Street Harassment reporting app

VAWG

Late last year, the Council worked with Stop Hate UK and VAWG specialists to develop a Street Harassment reporting app, which we plan to have ready in the spring.

Research the Council carried out with local women and girls in 2021 found that - for several reasons - a far greater amount of street harassment was taking place in Waltham Forest than was being reported to the Police – a trend mirrored up and down the country.

The reporting app will make it much easier to make a report, access independent support and will give the council robust data on the hotspots in which this unacceptable behaviour is taking place most. Users will have control over whether their details are shared or whether they would prefer to be anonymous.

It is with this data that the Council will further highlight the need for additional resources from the Met and central government to address male violence.

The app will supplement the many other ways street harassment and other forms of abuse and hatred can be reported.

Rapid home test kits

test

We now have limited supply of rapid lateral flow home test kits. To ensure that test kits are provided to those who need it most, please use up any test kits you have at home before getting any more.

You will need to pick them up from your local pharmacy using a Collect Code or order online from gov.uk or call 119 to deliver to your home.

Even if you feel well, test at least twice a week for Covid-19 and report each result.
