Residents' News

Walthom Forest

So many of you have told me how worried you are about the climate emergency and the recent flooding shows that it is already having a real impact on our community.

It will have the greatest effect on our young people and we owe it to them to listen to their concerns and take action now to give them a better future. That’s why it was a pleasure to visit Coppermill School today with Poppy, an Outreach Officer from the Suntrap Centre, to listen to students speak passionately about why protecting our planet is so important. Their voices are vital, and I want to hear more from them at every opportunity about how we can include them in making a real difference in doing the right thing. Other students from Barncroft School have been out this morning planting bulbs that will bloom next spring into flowers for our bees and pollinators.

I am also really looking forward to Monday 8 November when we will launch the first-ever Waltham Forest Youth Climate Summit. A range of inspirational speakers will talk with young people to encourage them to lead change in their communities. Without their involvement, we cannot hope to succeed - I am sure we will learn a huge amount from them. I will be there myself next Friday so will report back on what happens.

I can’t believe it is already November. I’ve had to get out my winter jacket as there’s a chill in the air and the clocks have gone back. If you are eligible for a Covid-19 booster jab or a flu vaccination, please do get your jab. It will not just protect you – it will help protect our loved ones as well as the most vulnerable members of our community. With nearly 700 new Covid-19 cases recorded in Waltham Forest over the last seven days, it’s really important to boost your immunity this winter.

I would like to wish a Happy Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas to all our staff and their families celebrating today. To celebrate we will be unveiling a brand-new colourful lighting design for the fountain and Town Hall façade that will run every evening throughout the month. We also have our first-ever winter market this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Fellowship Square – do come on down and enjoy it!

School Streets

school

Since its launch 2019, Waltham Forest Council has invited schools to apply to School Streets to create traffic-free zones in nearby roads at drop-off and pickup times.

The idea has quickly spread across the borough, with a total of 19 schools now signed up. Transport is an important action area for the Council as it tackles the Climate Emergency as it is recognised as a leader in promoting active and sustainable transport.

In this video, parents and teachers at Newport School in Leyton explain why they took action on toxic air on the school run.

Electric charging points

As part of the Council's response to the climate emergency and residents’ requests for more electric vehicle charging points across the borough, it has committed to installing at least a further 206 electric vehicle charging points across the borough by April 2022.

The plans for extra charging mean there will be a minimum of 412 electric vehicle charging points, another stage on the Council’s journey to becoming a greener borough by building a network of infrastructure for electric vehicles.

Stay Safe this Bonfire Night

Bonfire night

If you’re planning to celebrate Bonfire Night on November 5 with family and friends who you do not live with, it's much safer to meet outdoors as this is one of the ways which will help to stop the spread of the virus.

In the seven days up to 30 October, there were 658 cases of people catching Covid-19 in Waltham Forest, which is why it’s important to protect yourself as there is still a risk of you picking up the virus and passing it on to others.

You can help stop the virus spreading by:

  • Washing your hands
  • Wearing your face covering
  • Keeping your distance where you can
  • Testing regularly
  • Self-isolating when instructed to do
