Residents' News

Walthom Forest

We have just announced an extra £5.5 million investment with a real focus on increasing support for those most impacted by the pandemic, namely children and young people as well as older residents.

Alongside this we are stepping up our efforts to get residents a Fair Deal from the Government. From police numbers, public health funding to the state of Whipps Cross Hospital, this borough doesn’t get the funding it deserves and that needs to change.

Some decisions on the way we are funded from central Government are based in the past and are simply unfair. For too long Waltham Forest has suffered from the perception that places like Westminster or Tower Hamlets somehow need more money and resources than us. These are dangerously outdated views of inner and outer London that are plain wrong and do a disservice to our residents. That’s why we need the Government to step up and give Waltham Forest the Fair Deal it deserves.

This package of support will help our most vulnerable residents, our young people who need opportunities and the chance to develop their skills, and older residents who should be able to enjoy ageing well in Waltham Forest with their voices heard and valued. We must do all we can to reduce inequalities in our communities, remove the barriers that too many people face, and deliver a Fair Deal for all our residents.

Last night I attended a moving and poignant memorial at the Town Hall for Cllr Chris Robbins, Mayor and former Council Leader, who sadly passed away in April. There were many heartfelt tributes from his friends, family and colleagues, a testament to the important role he played in so many of our lives. As Leader, he always impressed me by bringing back any meeting or board back to the crucial question–what difference will it make to our residents? Chris’ hard work, enthusiasm, and generosity will always be remembered by everyone here in Waltham Forest.

Finally, the news that Covid-19 cases are likely to rise this winter is a reminder that the risk of infection is still very much here. We need everyone who has been invited for their booster or flu vaccine to get it as this will help us reduce the spread of the viruses and protect our most vulnerable people. And if you haven’t yet had your first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine – please do consider it. You can walk-in and get yours tomorrow at Walthamstow Library between 10am-4.30pm or pre-book your appointment online.

Fair Deal for Waltham Forest

fair deal..

Waltham Forest Council has unveiled a  £5.5m support package focused on younger and older residents who have been worst affected by the pandemic, alongside a new lobbying campaign to ensure the borough gets a Fair Deal from central Government.

The funding pot announced includes a £1.4m investment in children’s services, a £400,000 investment to help people in the borough age well, and £230,000 of investment to connect Waltham Forest residents with good jobs.

The funding will be accompanied by an increase in campaigning of Government to ensure that Waltham Forest gets a Fair Deal and receives the level of support it deserves.

And if you’ve not yet had your first dose of the vaccine, it’s not too late. In the last seven days, Waltham Forest has had over 600 new Covid-19 cases, so the virus is still very much here.

By having the vaccine, you can reduce your risk of infection by up to 80%.

This week, we have walk-in clinics at Walthamstow Library on Saturday between 10am-4.30pm and at Jubilee Centre in Leyton between 10am-6pm. If you’re going for your booster at Jubilee Centre, please pre-book your slot by calling

The children's flu vaccine is safe and effective and offered through GP’s or at school. It's offered every year as a nasal spray to children to help protect them against flu. It is free for:

  • Children aged 2 or 3 years on 31 August 2021 – born between 1 September 2017 and 31 August 2019.
  • All primary school children (reception to year 6).
  • All year 7 to year 11 children in secondary school.
  • Children aged 2 to 17 years with long-term health conditions.

Some children might be eligible for a flu-jab instead of the nasal spray. Speak to your GP or school nurse to learn more about this option. You can also find out if you’re eligible by visiting our website.

Stay safe this Halloween and Bonfire Night!

fireworks and halloween

Although Covid-19 restrictions were relaxed on 19 July, it’s still important that all residents continue to stay safe to help stop the spread of Covid-19 this year when celebrating Halloween on 31 October and Bonfire night on 5 November.

Whether you are planning a family get together or attending an event in the borough with friends to mark these dates, here’s how to stay safe:

  • Maintain your social distance and wear a mask in crowded public spaces.
  • Test twice a week even if you think you're well.
  • Self-isolate when instructed to do so.

Stopping smoking while in pregnancy

Smoke free pregnancy

Protecting your baby from tobacco smoke is one of the best things you can do to give your child a healthy start in life.

Every cigarette you smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, so smoking when you are pregnant harms your unborn baby. Cigarettes can also restrict the essential oxygen supply to your baby, resulting in their heart having to beat harder every time you smoke.

Contact our Quit Smoking Service in Waltham Forest for free confidential support to help you quit this Stoptober!

Emergency exercise at Avenue Road estate

fire

One of the Council’s most important roles is making sure officers, partners, and residents are prepared in the event of an emergency.

On Wednesday 13 March, officers from across the organisation joined London Fire Brigade colleagues to run an exercise at the Avenue Road estate to test the response to an incident in a high-rise block.

Two emergency rest centres were set up to accommodate those evacuated as part of the exercise. Ensuring we can provide care for those affected by an emergency is key, and the Council runs regular exercises with partners to ensure it is ready for a real-life situation.

There are simple, practical steps you can take at a home to make sure you and your family are ready before an emergency.
