Residents' News

Walthom Forest

We are all shocked and saddened by the tragic news of the death of MP Sir David Amess, who was stabbed while holding a surgery with constituents in Leigh-on-Sea earlier today. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this incredibly sad time.

In Waltham Forest, we approved our Climate Emergency Response yesterday that will help us reach our ambition of becoming net-zero by 2030. Net-zero means as a borough we will no longer be putting more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than we are able to take away.

To get there we will continue to work on housing, to insulate and retrofit more homes making them more energy efficient. And we’ll show what is possible with our major developments, such as on our relaunch of the former Granada/EMD Cinema in Walthamstow, which has air source heat pumps and solar panels. And in transport, we plan to expand the successful School Streets across the borough to reduce vehicle emissions, and help more people cycle by installing 150 more bike hangars across the borough.

Planting more trees will ensure we can take more harmful gases out of the atmosphere to offset the ones we use to heat our homes or drive our cars. So as part of our climate emergency response, we can announce that whenever a tree is removed on a Council development, we will replace it with five more, and at least one of them will be a mature tree. Plus we are planting an additional 8,000 trees over the next six months to continue to make the borough a more green and pleasant place.

I have been working closely with the Deputy Leader, Cllr Clyde Loakes, to develop the climate emergency plan; his track record on environmental issues leaves me in no doubt we’ll meet our climate goals. While the news will be dominated by the COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow at the end of the month, we know that changing the world starts from the community up, and we’ll be tackling this global crisis street by street here in Waltham Forest.

I’ve been delighted by the response so far to our Whipps Won’t Wait campaign, gaining over 3,000 signatures in seven days. Listening to the stories of healthcare workers who were heroically treating patients at Whipps during the terrible floods over the summer showed why we urgently need a completely new hospital for our borough. Please do show your support by signing our Whipps Won’t Wait petition.

Climate Emergency

Climate emergency

Waltham Forest Council’s response to the landmark Climate Emergency Commission report identifies changing behaviours, delivering green job opportunities, and empowering young people as key to protecting our environment for future generations.

Most carbon emissions in Waltham Forest are caused by housing and transport. Taking action to reduce these emissions will help save money on fuel bills as well as contribute toward cleaner air. The Council has also pledged to plant even more trees and wildflowers across the borough, providing a boost to local wildlife including pollinators, starting with the Bulb Giveaway next weekend.

A key element of the plan will see the Suntrap Centre undergo a £4.5 million refurbishment to create London’s first climate campus for young people, delivering a curriculum that informs and empowers them to take meaningful action to protect our environment.

Whipps Won't Wait

whipps

#WhippsWontWait is our campaign for a new hospital at Whipps Cross.

In partnership with Redbridge Council, the campaign is calling on the government to secure funding for Whipps. If the funding is not agreed this autumn, there is a real risk the new hospital will not be built.

The recent flooding that closed the A&E and prevented hundreds of essential operations, showed once again the dire condition the hospital is in, and why Whipps staff, patients and residents deserve the modern hospital promised to them.
