Walthom Forest

On Monday I was proud to reopen Lea Bridge Library. This is a major part of the Council’s £4 million library investment programme that has seen a new library open in Wood Street and will see Walthamstow Library restored to its former glory when it fully reopens later this year.

As you’ll see from the photos, Lea Bridge Library is an inspiring place and it was great to see so many children and young people at the reopening event. I'm sure the new facility will be a fantastic destination for the community for many years to come!

And make a note that I’ll be chairing a live Covid-19 vaccine webinar on Facebook next Thursday, 30 September, at 5.30pm, with local GP Dr Ken Aswani and Director of Public Health Joe McDonnell joining me to answer any questions you have about the vaccine.

With the vaccine rollout being extended to 12-15 year olds and the booster jab on its way I am sure many of you will want to get your questions answered by the experts. The vaccine is really important as data shows that 89 per cent of people admitted into intensive care in north-east London hospitals with Covid-19 were not fully vaccinated, underlining the urgent need for us all to protect ourselves and others by having the jab.

Waltham Forest Town Hall was lit up green and the Council is holding a series of fun and informative events up to the 26 September to mark Recycle Week 2021, to encourage residents and businesses to recycle more things more often.

This year’s events focus on how recycling and reusing can help tackle the climate crisis, including a ‘reuse exhibition’ in Walthamstow Mall tomorrow, Friday 24 September, where a living room and home office display will show how reused and upcycled items are environmental and sustainable alternatives to new furniture.

School Streets

school streets

Since 2019, Waltham Forest Council has invited schools to apply to become School Streets, which creates traffic-free zones in nearby roads at drop off and pick up times.

The idea has spread across the borough, with St. Saviours Primary School and Connaught School for Girls the newest School Streets, meaning a total of 19 schools are now signed up.

On World Car Free Day on 22 September the Council and Transport for London announced plans to install four extra cycle hubs at train stations across the borough, creating 212 more cycle parking spaces, giving residents in Waltham Forest even more opportunities to use bikes as a part of their journeys.

Two new hubs will be installed at Blackhorse Road station, creating 160 more spaces in total. Chingford and Highams Park stations will each receive a new hub with 26 spaces, with the plans adding to over 450 cycle hub parking spaces already in place in the borough.
