Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Walthom Forest

I am pleased to announce that from today, we have Pfizer vaccinations available to anyone aged 18 or over. Both the London Stadium and Walthamstow Library are offering Pfizer vaccines to anyone of adult age and we're encouraging you to go and get your vaccine if you can. There are plenty of slots available on Saturday, and the library will continue to have slots of both Pfizer and AstraZeneca available to all adults over the next couple of weeks. Please make sure you pre-book in for these sites on the links below.

Taking the vaccine is one of the biggest ways we can protect ourselves and help the country move out of the pandemic. On Monday the Prime Minister announced that we will be staying in Step 3 of the roadmap for another four weeks until 19 July. I'd like to take the time to thank every resident who has made sacrifices to protect themselves and other people during this time. I know it hasn't been easy and understand how challenging this news is to hear. Let's pull together and keep going - we will get through it.

In other news, we're delighted to announce our first Waltham Forest Tree Giveaway. Cllrs Clyde Loakes and Grace Williams will be writing to all primary schools in Waltham Forest over the next week inviting students to get involved by asking their parents or carers to apply online via the Council websiteYou can read more about this exciting climate change project below.

Have a great week and enjoy the sunshine.

Help to bridge the access gap

Signs 4 life

A new initiative to encourage more members of the public to take up sign language as an extra language and skill, is now available locally.

The Signs4Life scheme is to help people to communicate and engage with children and adults who may be hard of hearing.

With more than nine million hard of hearing people registered in the UK, it's vital that we bridge the access gap.

Signs4Life is leading efforts towards a society in which people with disabilities have full access and are working to raise the public and political awareness of disability provision.

If you're interesting in the free, six week British Sign Language (BSL) course, then you can sign up below.

What does staying in Step 3 mean?

test and trace

Due to the increasing rates of infection and the concern over the Delta variant, the government have paused the roadmap for four weeks, until 19 July.

This means we will be remaining in Step three of the roadmap, and the majority of restrictions will not be easing any further yet.

From 21 June:

  • The rule of six still applies indoors and when visiting pubs and indoor hospitality
  • Outdoor gatherings must not exceed 30 people
  • Weddings will be able to have more than 30 attendees, as long as social distancing can be safely followed

Help stop the spread of Delta variant

Testing

With cases of the Delta variant rising across the UK, we urge everyone across all communities to take a test if you don’t have Covid-19 symptoms and even if you have already been vaccinated.

1 in 3 people who have Covid-19 look and feel fine but can still be silent carriers of the virus.

By getting tested, you are protecting yourselves and your families and helping to stop the Delta variant from spreading further.

Tests are quick and easy - simply walk-in at any of our test centres, or pick up a free rapid test kit and use it twice a week at home as part of your routine.

Are you at risk of Type 2 diabetes?

Public Health

Approximately 21,954 of our residents have Type 2 diabetes, of which around 3000 are undiagnosed and therefore not receiving treatment.

Diabetes can lead to worse outcomes such as amputations, heart attack, kidney failure, eyesightloss and other complications including increased risk to Covid-19.

Small, simple, lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, exercise and knowing your risk of diabetes can make a big difference, lower your risk, delay onset or may prevent or reverse type 2 diabetes.

Take our short questionnaire to find out if you are at risk of developing diabetes.

More information about local resources to free support with healthy living and preventing diabetes is also available on our website.
