Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Walthom Forest
Test and Trace

Yesterday was a record day for the vaccine rollout in Waltham Forest. Nearly 3,000 residents were vaccinated at Walthamstow Library in one day, with hundreds more being vaccinated at sites such as Chingford Leisure Centre and more at today's pop-up site at Leytonstone Library. We continue to see such huge achievements in the vaccination rollout which demonstrates the excellent community spirit we have here in Waltham Forest. Local doctors, NHS staff, our council staff, volunteers and residents continue to pull together and we are achieving amazing things.

Vaccine sites across the borough are back to business as usual, so please only go to a vaccine site if you have an appointment booked. As part of our number one priority to you, we will continue to do everything we can to support this rollout and will keep working in partnership with Waltham Forest Clinical Commissioning Group to develop further pop-ups and vaccine sites across the borough.

The horrific murder of Sarah Everard has shone a spotlight on the violence and harassment that women and girls in our society face every single day. Whilst Sarah’s murder attracted widespread horror and condemnation, many deaths, like those of Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry, go under-reported.  We all have to do more to end the cycle of violence endemic in our society - please read more about how we're going to tackle this through our Stand by Her programme below.

With restrictions easing slightly this week, we are now able to socialise outdoors with friends and families as groups of six or as two households. This weekend, it is vital that we do not bend or break the rules and do not socialise indoors. I know it might be tempting to pop inside when we get chilly, but we will be putting our future freedom at risk if we do this.

By following the rules now, we can make sure we can get life back to normal - something we all desperately need and deserve.

Leyton Orient have No Space for Hate

No Hate

The Leyton Orient men’s team will be warming up in “No Space for Hate” t-shirts before Monday’s game against Walsall at the The Breyer Group Stadium.

As a Council we’re so proud to be partnering with Leyton Orient to raise awareness of the positive role we can all play in challenging hate and to encourage residents who witness or experience hate to report it.

Dr Ashraf urges residents to take their vaccine during Ramadan

Vaccine

Dr Ashraf, local GP, Clinical Chair of the E4 Network and practicing Muslim has spoken about why it is so important that residents continue to take their Covid-19 vaccine during the holy month of Ramadan.

In a recent article, he shared: 'As Muslims we have a duty to preserve life and getting vaccinated is the most effective way to prevent illness and loss of life from Covid-19.

We must now stand together and not allow this progress to halt during Ramadan.'

Dr Ashraf kindly filmed a video to talk more about this issue.

Phone snatch arrests

police

Police, aided by partners at Waltham Forest Council, have made several arrests following a spate of street thefts by males on pedal bikes.

It follows a two month operation, by uniform and plain clothes officers, spanning across Hoe Street, Mark House, and High Street Wards in Walthamstow.

The ten arrested are believed to be part of two separate groups who were snatching mobile phones out of people’s hands.

Anyone with information that could assist in identifying these suspects is asked to contact Police on 101 or anonymously via Crime stoppers on 0800 555 111. In event of emergency always dial 999.

Stand By Her

No Hate

The murder of Sarah Everard has again brought violence against women and girls into the media spotlight.

The fact remains that on average a woman is killed by a man every three days. Such crimes rarely happen in isolation, which is why every community has a part to play in ending this, and why we’re grateful to all the community groups that have pledged support.

Men are critical allies in bringing change, and soon we will be introducing our Stand By Her programme: designed by women, delivered by men - to men.

It will teach what misogyny is and how to intervene when you see it. To register your interest contact, please email the team.
