Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Walthom Forest

We have seen a welcome reduction in the number of new positive cases in Waltham Forest and I'd like to thank you all for this. It is everyone’s hard work and sacrifice that means Waltham Forest infection rates are now below both the London and national average for the first time in months. Getting out of lockdown will only be possible if we continue to see rates fall – so it's great to see clear progress being made!

We're also continuing to try and make sure we've got the right support in place to help our borough recover from this pandemic, including supporting our local economy and also bringing jobs into our borough. If your employment has been impacted during this time, we'd love to hear from you so that we can ensure our support is built around those that need it most.

I'd also like to let you know that you can now apply for a postal vote, for the upcoming Mayoral elections in May. Polling stations will be made Covid-19 secure, however anyone can register for a postal vote so you can do so from home.

This week also sees the launch of our No Space for Hate campaign, partnering with Stop Hate UK to launch a new 24-hour hotline where hate crimes and incidents can be reported. We will not tolerate hate in Waltham Forest and I want to assure you we're working hard to bring to life the recommendations made by residents at our 2020 Citizens Assembly.

You can read more on all these topics below. Thank you once again for your support in stopping the spread of coronavirus across Waltham Forest.

Together, we are making a difference.

No Space for Hate in Waltham Forest

No Hate

This week the Council has launched its No Space for Hate programme, through which we are bringing to life the recommendations from the 2020 Citizen’s Assembly on the topic of hate.

As part of this, we’ve partnered with Stop Hate UK to launch a new 24-hour helpline where residents can report hate crimes and instances, making reporting and accessing support easier for victims.

We are also launching a Bystander Intervention training programme to empower residents to spot hate, safely diffuse it and support victims. The training starts online next week with a group of 30 residents who have a prior interest in the topic.

Residents who complete the training will become No Space for Hate Ambassadors. If you’d like to participate in the training, please register an expression of interest by emailing the team.

You can now apply for a postal vote

Ballot Box voting

In May there will be elections for the Mayor of London, Greater London Assembly, and a by-election for the Hatch Lane Ward.

Polling stations will be made safe for you to vote with socially distanced queues, regular cleaning, and personal protective equipment. This may mean that voting takes a little longer than usual, however you can apply for a postal vote if you would prefer to vote from home.

On the application for postal vote, you do not need to give a reason - any one can register for a postal vote. You will need to give us your date of birth and signature on your application form and again when you complete your postal vote. We will compare these to keep your vote secure.

The deadline to apply for elections in May is 5pm, Tuesday 20 April 2021. The earlier you apply, the earlier we can send your postal vote.

Get support if you've been asked to self-isolate

Test and Trace

If you have tested positive for Covid-19 or have been asked by the NHS to self-isolate because you've been in contact with someone who has the virus, it is vital that you do stay at home.

If you choose to leave your home, knowing you have or could have Covid-19 - you will be putting the lives of others at risk.

We know that self-isolating brings many challenges and we want to support you through this process.

If you are unable to work from home and lose income as a result of having to self-isolate, or receive one of these listed benefits you may be eligible to a payment of £500.

You can read the full list of criteria and how you can apply on our website.

Our apprentices are doing amazing things!

apprentices

During National Apprenticeships Week, we spoke to Emre, an apprentice electrician, who’s working on Fellowship Square – redeveloping the much-loved iconic building and surrounding area.

‘I enjoy the experience of working on a construction site, learning new things and being part of a part of something that is very important to the local borough and community.’

Anyone can benefit from our apprenticeship scheme. Check out our current Apprenticeships programme & sign up to free webinars this week.

Can you help us debunk Covid-19 misinformation?

Stay Safe Champions

Thank you to the 400 residents who have signed up to be virtual Stay Safe Champions so far.

These volunteers help us share factual information to other residents, helping us to debunk misinformation about testing and vaccinations. We know there is a lot of information shared, which is often incorrect and potentially dangerous - and we need your help to stop that.

Through regular WhatsApp and email broadcasts, we share latest guidance and ask our volunteers to share it to any networks they might be a part of.

It could be a community Facebook group, a resident WhatsApp chat or to family members that you know don't access our main channels, like this newsletter or our social media accounts.

If you think you could help us, please do sign up to a be a virtual champion.
