The enabling works for Coronation Square, started in Autumn 2020, continue apace in the new year as Taylor Wimpey, the Council’s development partner, prepares the site for construction.
The site is currently being cleared and is due to be hoarded before the main construction work starts in early spring 2021.
The Score leisure centre and nursery will remain open throughout the enabling works and first phase of the construction. This phase will see the building of the new leisure centre, nursery, health hub, and commercial units, ready for the services to transfer from their existing facilities in 2024.
We’ll keep you updated about the main construction works in the coming weeks.
Coronation Square is the largest in scale of the Council’s regeneration programme, bringing many benefits to the local community, including:
- 750 new homes, 50 per cent of which will be below market rate, prioritised for local residents
- Health hub
- Pre-school nursery
- Enhanced indoor sports and leisure centre with community facilities including meeting rooms
- Civic square with shops and cafés
- Commercial space for shops and businesses
- Improvements to public areas
The development will offer new jobs and work placements for local residents, including 45 apprenticeships, 20 Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) qualified roles, 10 traffic marshall posts, and 38 work placements.

The Coronation Square development is looking for Waltham Forest artists to create a prominent and public visual celebration of the Leyton community. This special commission will take pride of place on the hoardings of the new Coronation Square development, which will be on site for up to six years.
The budget for the commission is £5,000, which must include all artist fees, expenses and design development.
