Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Walthom Forest

The situation is very serious in Waltham Forest. Cases of Covid19 are rising, and we now have some of the highest infection rates in the UK.

Our Director of Public Health Joe McDonnell has an important message for the community about the current situation.

Director of Public Health Joe McDonnell

“The rise of Covid-19 cases in Waltham Forest and right across London is extremely worrying. The number of cases has nearly doubled over the last month, and 1,065 people tested positive in the last 7 days. All areas of the borough have high rates of community transmission among all age groups.

"Whipps Cross Hospital is seeing increases in admissions and staff are working extremely hard to manage this. Sadly, deaths from the virus are also increasing and services are stretched. Last week, there were seven confirmed Covid-19 deaths.

"Here are some steps we can all take to reduce the pressure on our NHS:

  • The best way to prevent catching the virus is by reducing your contact with others outside your household.
  • Ask yourself whether going out shopping or to cafés and bars at peak times is absolutely necessary. Shops at this time of the year are especially busy at weekends. Can you find time to visit in the week when less people will be about? Please do so if you are able.
  • Get a test at one of our testing centres. You do not need to book ahead - just turn up. We are especially encouraging children aged 11-18 and their families to get tested even without symptoms. (See below for full details.)
  • Please remember not to mix with people indoors from outside your household. Follow Hands Face Space guidance: Wash your hands regularly with soap, cover your face with a mask indoors and in public places, and keep a two-metre distance where possible.

"Now is not the time to let your guard down. Rates in Waltham Forest are some of the highest in the country. The vaccine will not be available for most of us for some time.

"Thank you and remember we all have a role to play.

"Stay safe Waltham Forest."
