Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Walthom Forest
Test and Trace

We currently have the most number of confirmed Covid-19 cases we have had at any point during the pandemic and deaths are rising as well. We all need to change our behaviour to ensure we reduce the transmission of the virus which is now spreading in all areas of the borough. The Vaccine will not be rolled out to the majority of residents for months to come, so please protect yourself.

In a video recorded this week, I talk more about how we can all help to protect the people of Waltham Forest. I know with the festive period around the corner, it's really tempting to socialise with friends and family inside. However, I want you to understand that if you choose to do this, you are putting us all at risk. Please make sure you do not invite anyone you do not live with into your home or meet with them in indoor venues such as pubs or restaurants.

It's also really important that if you have to leave your home, you wear a face covering in enclosed spaces and keep apart from people you do not live with. I'd like to thank every resident who has ordered a face covering so far, by doing this you're helping us to protect Waltham Forest. We've provided a huge 35,000 face masks to residents, local businesses and community groups and if you need one you can still order it on our website or by calling 020 8496 3000.

Have a great weekend, and please do stay safe.

Thanks for your donations to the Christmas and Winter appeal

CHN

Since we launched the crowdfunder earlier this week, 67 contributors have donated a total of £14,595! Thanks so much to everybody who has contributed, and to everyone who supports others in the community.

For those who might have missed it, money raised from the appeal will go towards a Christmas present drive for vulnerable children and to local organisations supporting residents who face homelessness, food poverty, loneliness and vulnerable families.

If your situation allows and you would like to make a donation you can visit the link below.

Got symptoms? Please stay home and get tested.

test and trace

With Covid-19 rates extremely high in Waltham Forest, it is vital that if you experience any coronavirus symptoms, you stay at home and order a test.

If you start to experience symptoms, you must self-isolate at home for 10 days from when your symptoms start. You must arrange a test by calling 119 or by booking online, and the test results will tell you how long you need to stay at home.

If you live with someone who has confirmed Covid-19, it's really important that you stay at home for 14 days and only arrange a test if you start experiencing symptoms.

We know self-isolating can be a challenge if you are working or have responsibilities but it is so important that you do. If you need further support to self-isolate, there is financial support available.

Forest Road is getting a face lift

forest road

Since 2015, we have been working to make Forest Road a safer, more accessible place for people to travel along, whether walking, cycling, driving or using public transport. This is all part of our plans for people friendly streets.

In 2017 we asked local people for input on our proposals to improve the Bell Junction. The proposals were well supported at public consultation and detailed design work took place during 2018 to get the plans ready for construction.

Now, with London Streetspace Programme funding from TfL we are planning to introduce new measures for walking and cycling between the William Morris Gallery and Woodford New Road.

If you'd like to read more, or want to leave a comment on this development you can on our website.

To support schools there’ll be no financial penalty if visits are cancelled due to Covid-19.

Following current guidance the Suntrap team continue to provide school outreach visits and will offer day visits to the newly refurbished site from March 2021.

4,000 visits to help businesses stay safe

enforcement

Since the beginning of November, council enforcement officers have visited over 4,000 businesses in the borough to share advice on how to keep customers and staff safe and healthy.

The team have continued to engage with businesses so that they are aware of their obligations, with an emphasis on educating and supporting them through this challenging time.

Officers only take enforcement action when it is absolutely necessary, to make sure that residents’ health is protected.

Officers have also been working alongside the Police as part of a shared commitment to target nuisance and criminal activity in the borough over the festive period. If you need advice on how to stay business safe, visit our website.

Second phase of Choose Local launches

choose local

The second phase of Waltham Forest Council’s Choose Local. Support Everyone. campaign was launched on Small Business Saturday (5 December), in a continued drive to make the link between the value of shopping locally and a great place to live.

Launched in July 2020 as a response to the challenges faced by businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic, the campaign is fronted by case studies of those which represent the diversity of the borough and demonstrate the value in choosing local shops, suppliers and tradespeople to boost the local economy.

As the national lockdown lifted last week, our next phase of the campaign launched and we're encouraging you to choose local this Christmas.

Could you be a Snow Angel?

Snow angels

The nights are getting darker early and there’s a chill in the air…

So we’re asking for residents who can lend a hand keeping the community safe. Snow Angels are local residents who volunteer to clear snow and ice from paths in their neighbourhood. All Snow Angels will receive:

  • 20kg bag of grit
  • a branded hi-visibility vest
  • protective gloves
  • snow scoop or plastic shovel

As a Snow Angel you can make real difference for your friends and neighbours, especially those who are less mobile or who use prams or mobility scooters.
