Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Walthom Forest
Test and Trace

The recent good news around a possible vaccine to help us protect against Covid-19 has given us all hope that we can see a return to something approaching normal later next year. However, it is important to remember that whilst this is cause for optimism, we must be careful to continue following the latest public health rules to keep each other safe.

Rapid testing is a key part of this effort, and Waltham Forest was this week chosen to receive thousands of these in the coming weeks. Local plans for use of these tests are still being considered, but they will follow our priorities of supporting the most vulnerable and those at highest risk, as part of our overall work to control the virus and protect our residents.

This week, we have also published our 12 commitments which sets how we will tackle the virus and get Waltham Forest back on its feet.

To stop the spread of the virus we have been enhancing the governments tracing system by contacting those who need to self-isolate. I am pleased to say that this has improved the Waltham Forest tracing rate from 70% to 87%.

For those of you self-isolating to stop the spread, keep going and well done.

Stay safe Waltham Forest.

Test and Trace commitments

Local contract tracing helps to track positive coronavirus cases

nhs track and trace

At the end of October, we launched our locally enhanced contact tracing service delivered by staff from our Resolution Centre, who have completed a Public Health England training programme.

The service works closely with the NHS Test and Trace programme to contact residents who have tested positive for Covid-19 but have not been reached by the NHS programme. We are contacting residents to help them isolate to protect their families and friends.

To date over 300 cases have been referred to the Local Contact Tracing service and successful contacts have risen from 70% to 87% since the launch.

With more people being successfully contact, it means we able to actively track and stop the spread of coronavirus, whilst also supporting residents with the right advice and support that they need to self-isolate.

Free face masks for every resident that needs one

Test and Trace

As part of our 12 commitments, we want to make sure everyone who needs a face mask has access to one. Face coverings are one of the best ways residents can keep each other safe, so it's important that every resident has access to a face mask.

Each household can order through our website, calling our customer services team or by collecting their masks locally at our open libraries.

Masks will be available for distribution and collection from Friday 13 November.

Please remember to only order what you need.

Celebrating Diwali safely this year

Test and Trace Diwali

We want to wish a Happy Diwali to all of our residents that will be celebrating this week.

We know how challenging it has been this year to not be able to meet with friends and family, and celebrate how we normally would.

Even though it's tough, we still need to make sure we're following restrictions and not putting ourselves and loved ones at risk.

Please remember not to meet indoors with anyone you do not live with or who is not in your support bubble.

Celebrate safely

Remembrance Sunday in 2020

Remembrance

Small, covid-secure and socially distanced events took place during Remembrance Sunday at War Memorials at Kings Head Hill, Lloyd Park, Coronation Gardens and Harrow Green.

With the usual parades not being possible, the focus was very much on the act of wreath laying alongside a broader message to “Remember at Home”.

The Waltham Forest Mayor, Cllr Chris Robbins visited both Leyton and Walthamstow, the Borough’s Deputy Lieutenant Major Jeremy Fern was present, as were a number of community faith leaders.

If you'd like to make a donation to the Royal British Legion (RBL), you can do so on their website.

Enforcement officers make over 1,000 visits to local businesses

Enforcement

Since the start of November, enforcement officers have made more than 1,000 visits to businesses across the borough.

We are happy to report that for that 84% of businesses have been complying with the new lockdown regulations aimed at keeping residents healthy and safe.

The main non-compliance issues the team encountered have related to face-mask wearing and takeaway service rules not being adhered to (for example, tables and chairs being used by customers.)

We would like to thank all the businesses in the borough for working with us to stay safe during this difficult time.
