Update on building new homes for local residents

Central Parade CGI 2019

Work progresses well for building 19 new homes, 50 per cent affordable, at Central Parade.

The garages and pram sheds, which were magnets for Anti-Social Behaviour, have been demolished and site secured.

Moving the electricity sub-station is one of the first jobs that will take place inside the compound before building work begins on the new homes and commercial space approved for the site.

At the same time work is being done to convert unused offices in the Listed Building into new homes and to do maintenance on the other existing homes.

This week will see scaffolding starting to be erected from the first floor upwards to allow this initial repair and maintenance work to take place.

Clock Tower and tiles to be protected

The clock tower at Central Parade is one of the main features of the building.

The ceramic tiles, many of which show heraldic shields that have strong links with the borough, are a key reason why the building has a Grade II Listing.

During the work to create new homes at Central Parade the tiles will be protected as scaffolding is erected to reduce the risk of any damage.

Where minor damage already exists investigations will take place to see if appropriate repairs can be done while the scaffolding is in place.

Shops will stay open during building work
