Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Walthom Forest

Dear residents

In Waltham Forest, my priority is doing everything we can to improve the life chances of children and young people. Following the Government’s announcement that schools should prepare to open for more children from 1 June we have been working with our schools to plan how this can be delivered in Waltham Forest.

The safety of children, their families and school staff remains the prime concern for the Council and Headteachers. Following careful consultation with schools, unions and parents, it is clear some schools are ready to open on 1 June, but others still have further planning to do. We will do all we can to support Headteachers to open schools to more pupils however  only when they are ready and it is safe to do so.

We would like to thank our Headteachers, and all school staff - from teachers and teaching assistants to school business managers, site service officers and cleaners – for their continued dedication, compassion and care provided across our community.

Rallying behind local organisations

Food banks

Last week we let you know that thanks to your donations we’ve been able to draw down a whopping total of £39,000 which has been directed to several local organisations who are helping residents through COVID, including providing essential food supplies, medicines or befriending support. You can read more about the support here.

We are also continuing to support our five food bank partners with food supplies while they are experiencing an unprecedented level of demand.

You can learn more about supporting your local foodbank here. There is also more information on our other amazing community organisations and the services they are delivering to support residents here.

Waltham Forest Streetspace

Social Distancing

Our Enjoy Waltham Forest team are continuing to develop our Streetspace scheme. to ensure as more people travel across the borough, they are able to do so safely.

We have introduced eight parking bay suspension locations and an additional two will be in place from Friday 22 May. These additional locations are High Road Leyton and Higham Hill Road.

We have now also developed footway widening in four areas, which involves claiming space from the carriageway safely or suspending carriageway parking bays or waiting/loading areas.

The sites that will have widened footways rom Friday 22 May are Higham Hill, James Lane, Winchester Road and Grove Green Road.

To read more or get started on your walking or cycling journey visit the Enjoy Waltham Forest Website today.

Skate park to reopen

Skate Park

In line with new government advice, on Saturday we will be reopening Lloyd Park's skatepark area (10 people max) and our park's bowls clubs (Walthamstow Borough, Aveling Park, and Chingford Bowls Clubs).

We encourage all users to ensure they are complying with social distancing guidelines. Always stay 2m away from people not from your household, and practice good hygiene – wash your hands and equipment regularly.

Enforcement officers will be out to ensure guidelines are followed. Please use these facilities responsibly to stop the spread of Coronavirus. For more information on parks and how you can use them, please see our website.

We have launched a fantastic Learning Together Project called Chit-Chat Pitter-Pat, where fun activities will be made available for you to try at home, suitable for 0-5 year olds.

These sessions will include:

Top Tips Tuesday - where we share a ‘Starting School Together Challenge’ to support you in making sure your child is ‘school ready’ for reception in September.
Thumbs Up Thursday – where families  share their examples of learning at home.
Share Day Saturday – A chance to celebrate learning together and share further ideas with each other.

To give it a try, follow along on Facebook or Instagram.

We want your views

Leytonstone

We are working hard to ensure that your parks and public spaces remain safe, clean and free from anti-social behaviour. We're doing this by proposing an extension to the Public Space Protection Order in the southern wards of the borough, covering Walthamstow, Leyton and Leytonstone areas.

This would give council and police officers the power to fine anyone doing the following in a public space:
a. Drinking alcohol
b. Begging in an aggressive or intimidating manner
c. Behaving in a manner which is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress
d. Urinating, defecating, spitting or dropping litter

We are consulting with you to ensure that residents’ views are included throughout this process, and would like to hear your thoughts.
