Big Youth Conversation asked young people whether they had experienced or witnessed hate crime. Shockingly nearly half of them said yes, whilst 18% said they weren't sure if they had.

The Councils Connecting Communities Team will be announcing a community-led initiative to tackle hate crime in the coming weeks that we want schools to be involved in. Stay Tuned.
50% of young people told the council that they felt unsafe to go out on their own, whilst 9% felt unsafe to go out at all.
Our youth-led Streetbase programme will hopefully make your young people feel better about getting out and about. It is a peer-to-peer engagement programme, run by young people.
Targeting hotspot crime areas in Waltham Forest, we engage young people signposting them to services or activities.
We will be in a handful of schools during our Opportunities to Flourish week - if you'd like us to visit your school in a lunch time during that week, please contact our Streetbase lead Katy Thompson.

As part of the Big Conversation we talked to all the young people about the council, but we found that lots weren't too sure what they did.
This was the same story in May - at our BYC Be A Councillor Hackathon. With the help of ShoutOut UK, local MC Lemzi, and the LGA, 10 schools attended and young people spoke about what politics meant, what the council did, and came up with ideas to get involved.
One idea caught their imaginations; Councillor Surgeries in Schools. Given these results, we will be supporting Councillors to reach out to schools this term to run sessions in your school. Stay Tuned!
