Big Youth Conversation (BYC)

We are the Life Chances Taskforce, proactive young people, helping the council ensure young people are at the heart of everything they do. A way in which we're doing this is through the Big Youth Conversation (BYC) and we're here to tell you more!

Continuing the success of the award winning BYC 2018, BYC 2019, surveyed people aged 7 to 25. Created and led by young people, it allowed young people to tell the council how it is to grow up here and what changes they want to see. We ran assemblies, workshops and attended many Waltham Forest events and even created a Borough of Culture video.

Below you can see the issues our peers told us they face, what the council will do and how you can get involved. More results will follow in October for you and your young people!

hate crime

Hate Crime: What you can do to support your students

Big Youth Conversation asked young people whether they had experienced or witnessed hate crime. Shockingly nearly half of them said yes, whilst 18% said they weren't sure if they had.

Given these stats, this quick video from the Met police, is a good starter for talking about hate crime with your students, as well as these resources which could help start the conversation in your school.

The Councils Connecting Communities Team will be announcing a community-led initiative to tackle hate crime in the coming weeks that we want schools to be involved in. Stay Tuned.

streetbase

Shout out for Streetbase!

50% of young people told the council that they felt unsafe to go out on their own, whilst 9% felt unsafe to go out at all.

Our youth-led Streetbase programme will hopefully make your young people feel better about getting out and about. It is a peer-to-peer engagement programme, run by young people.

Targeting hotspot crime areas in Waltham Forest, we engage young people signposting them to services or activities.

We will be in a handful of schools during our Opportunities to Flourish week - if you'd like us to visit your school in a lunch time during that week, please contact our Streetbase lead Katy Thompson.

Find out more by emailing Katy.

But what is a council?

As part of the Big Conversation we talked to all the young people about the council, but we found that lots weren't too sure what they did.

This was the same story in May - at our BYC Be A Councillor Hackathon. With the help of ShoutOut UK, local MC Lemzi, and the LGA, 10 schools attended and young people spoke about what politics meant, what the council did, and came up with ideas to get involved.

One idea caught their imaginations; Councillor Surgeries in Schools. Given these results, we will be supporting Councillors to reach out to schools this term to run sessions in your school. Stay Tuned!

Find out other ways in which the council is engaging young people in the work they do in our blogs about young advisors, YIAG, Care Leavers, the Voice in Partnership Group and Life Chances Youth Taskforce here.

Lets talk money: FREE info session for your students

A Climate Emergency

43% of Young People told the council that there wasn’t enough advice on climate change. We want you to tell your young people that the council is taking action, and that there will be opportunities for them to take action

In April 2019, the council declared a ‘Climate Emergency’ and committed to launching a Commission to help shape our local response to this global challenge and to produce a set of ‘asks’ for our regional and national politicians.

The Climate Emergency Commission was officially launched by Cllr Loakes and one of its co-chairs, Syed Ahmed, Director of Energy for London at Walk-in-Stow on Sunday 22 September and the first meeting of the Commission took place this week.

To keep up to date on how you and your young people can get involved, sign up to our new Climate Emergency Newsletter.
