EMD Cinema to become major comedy venue

EMD cinema

Waltham Forest Council is set to purchase the former Granada cinema on Hoe Street, Walthamstow.

The much loved building hosted The Beatles, Johnny Cash and The Who live on stage in its heyday and delighted thousands until its closure as a cinema in 2003. Now, it's set to rise again as a top entertainment venue in a partnership between the Council and Soho Theatre.

There will be major restoration needed to bring back the 1,000 seater auditorium into public use which we hope will happen in summer 2021.

Street lights and pavements get decorated

Walthamstow High Street street columns and pavement wayfinding

We have been working with traders, businesses and a consultant team led by Matter Architecture to deliver small improvements along Walthamstow Market to test impact and reaction to changes to the High Street.

The pilot projects, which are currently at testing stage, use the lamp columns which line either side of the market and the pavement to add vibrancy to the High Street.

We are using the colour palette inspired by the Wetlands and Epping Forest to introduce wayfinding without adding complexity to the busy shopping environment.

If you have been to the High Street in the last few weeks, you may have noticed that some of the columns have been wrapped in coloured vinyl. The test is currently being reviewed with proposals for a wider roll-out being developed.

Update on Rosebank Villas proposals

Rosebank Villas entrance to Walthamstow High Street

Following the public vote last autumn designs for the improvements at Rosebank Villas are now being developed in more detail before installation follows.

Work is scheduled to start during early summer on this artist-led project to add colour and interest to this well-used gateway between the High Street, the market and the bus station

Selborne Road tree pruning

Selborne Road Plane Trees

We are currently constructing the final parts of the bus priority improvement scheme in Selborne Road, which includes the extension of the bus lane along the road and junction improvement works at the entrance to Walthamstow Central bus station.

As part of these works we will be pruning the London Plane trees which run along Selborne Road, beside the Town Square and bus station. These works will allow the buses to travel along the road safely without colliding with overhanging tree branches.

While preparing for these works we have discovered that one of the trees beside the bus station has a fungal disease, which is attacking the tree’s base and roots. The decision has been made to remove this tree, as when it is in full leaf, in high winds, it could pose a risk to the public of falling. The tree is due to be removed in the coming weeks to prevent further spread of the disease. Its removal will also allow its neighbouring trees to thrive.

At the same time as the road improvements are being completed a new path is being constructed into Town Square gardens to provide pedestrians with better access to the bus station and Walthamstow market.
