Howzat! London's first cricket hub to be at Leyton

ECB Cricket Hub nets

Waltham Forest Council is joining forces with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to transform Leyton Sports Ground into a world-class cricket hub. This will play host to professional matches as well as provide local residents with even more opportunity to get involved with sport.

The Leyton Sports Ground Main Sports Hall will be fully refurbished in time for this summer’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which will allow the ECB to capitalise on the tournament and promote the new centre while interest in cricket is at a peak.

The planned London Borough of Culture events due to take place at the Arts Centre during spring 2019 will not be affected by the project. We will also be continuing with the Heritage Lottery Funded work and the Borough of Culture events planned for this site should not be affected by the work.

Food Hub survey launched

Another part of the Council’s investment on this site is the creation of a Food Hub which will promote healthy eating and provide training for local people wanting to develop a career in food. It will be a great place for a meal or drink especially whilst watching the quality sport programme.
The Food Hub project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Through this project the Grade II Listed Victorian Cricket Pavilion building and the adjacent historic ‘tin hut’ are to be conserved and developed as a real-food hub open to the public.

The proposal includes:

  • A restaurant
  • A food hall and café serving locally sourced food
  • A regular food market selling local produce
  • Events and activities celebrating the heritage of the ground and the neighbouring communities

Between now and 28 February 2019 a survey is taking place to see what residents and stakeholders would like to see as part of these activities and at the Food Hub.

You’ll be able to complete the survey online or may be approached by the survey team, from consultants, Lemon Drizzle, to give your views which will help us make sure the Food Hub meets local needs.
