We wrote to you at the end of March 2020 providing you with the details of the arrangements that the Welsh Government had decided to implement for dental care in Wales during the COVID-19 pandemic.

These arrangements were set out in a red alert notice from the Chief Dental Officer (CDO) and associated guidance, which included the arrangements for referral to the urgent dental centres that had been established.

The CDO has today (Friday 22 May) published a De-escalation Pandemic Plan for Dentistry in Wales that aims to implement a phased, risk-based re-establishment of dental services to meet population needs.

That plan can be viewed here and the guidance on the de-escalation standard operation processes can be viewed here.

The indicative dates for progressing through the alert levels are as follows:

Current: March-June 2020 – RED alert status

Phase 1: July-September 2020 – De-escalation of RED alert to high AMBER

Phase 2: October-December 2020 – De-escalation to low AMBER

Phase 3: January-March 2021 – De-escalation and the return to routine assessment and care.

Currently the red alert is still in place and any changes to that status will be announced by the CDO when it is deemed safe to do so.

Healthcare Inspectorate Wales will continue to communicate any changes to you as soon as possible.
