Cultural Ambassadors scheme launched to promote the Welsh language and heritage

On St David's Day, the Minister for Education and Welsh Language launched a Cultural Ambassadors scheme to promote the Welsh language, culture and heritage.

Any person or business can volunteer to become an ambassador by completing short interactive modules on the history of the Welsh language and its position today.

Using just a little bit of Cymraeg can make a big difference and offer key benefits to your business. Helo Blod provides a free, fast and friendly Welsh translation and advice service. Find out more on Welcome to Helo Blod | Helo Blod (gov.wales)

Cultural tourism in Powys – have your say!

Anian Ltd is working with Powys County Council to identify new ways to bring the area's cultural stories to life - to make them more accessible for local people, and relevant to future visitors.  So, if you live or work in Powys, or enjoy visiting the county, the team wants your input!

Share your thoughts about the area's outstanding cultural and heritage experiences, and how they can be developed in innovative ways for the benefit of visitors and local communities by completing this short online survey: Powys CTFS (snapsurveys.com)

Or book onto one of the FREE interactive workshops taking place on 13 March:

Coffee, cake, and exclusive tours with both business owners are included. Spaces are open to everyone, but tickets are limited. For more information email: tourism@powys.gov.uk

The project is funded by the Shared Prosperity Fund (Levelling Up).

Research & Insights:

Domestic consumer sentiment tracker survey

Visit Wales contributes to a consumer sentiment tracker survey to understand confidence, intent and barriers to take overnight short breaks and holidays in the UK and Wales.  Every month, UK findings are published on the VisitBritain website.

On 21 March, a Wales profile report will be published which examines in detail the intentions of those people planning to take trips during the spring and summer period and specifically those planning to come to Wales. It is intended to support policy making, industry marketing and planning activity.  The Wales profile report can be viewed from 21 March here.

Tourism Barometer: February Wave, 2024

The Barometer assesses business confidence in the Welsh tourism industry and provides indicative results at national, regional and sectoral level. The latest survey, undertaken February 2024, will include a look back at 2023, assessment of business confidence, occupancy statistics, and a look at use of Welsh in the workplace. It will be available to view from 12 March: Tourism Barometer: February Wave, 2024 | GOV.WALES

International Passenger Survey

The International Passenger Survey (IPS) collects information about passengers entering and leaving the UK, and has been running continuously since 1961. The latest provisional figures for Quarter 1, 2 and 3 data for 2023 have been published by the ONS.

The full year 2023 data will be published 17 May. Visit Wales will update the existing IPS publication with a summary of this data after 17 May: International inbound visits and spend to Wales | GOV.WALES

Mumbles coastal protection project

Swansea Council are upgrading and refurbishing the Mumbles coastal sea defences. The work will reduce the risk of flooding to homes and businesses that are increasingly threatened by rising sea levels brought about by climate change.

Funding for new defences was secured from the Welsh Government.  For further details visit Mumbles coastal protection project - Swansea

Stop Child Exploitation #LookCloser – guidance for tourism businesses

Accommodation providers, including Camping, caravan parks, self-catering accommodation, hotels and Bed and Breakfasts, are sadly often used as a place to exploit and abuse children and young people.

It is the responsibility of licence holders of premises, and their managers, to ensure appropriate measures are in place at their venues to protect children from harm.

Learn how to spot the signs of child exploitation, and how to report it, with free #LookCloser resources specific to tourism businesses: Stop Child Exploitation – guidance for tourism businesses | Business Wales (gov.wales)

Cultural Enterprises Conference & Trade Show –  13-14 March 2024, ICC Wales

An event that brings together learning, experience and best practice from all types of cultural venues across all areas of commercial activity. The programme is designed to help venues make more money with practical experience actions and inspiration to grow and develop your income streams.

Whilst the event is ticketed, the trade show, which features 100+ exhibitors, is free to attend.

Reminder: Workplace recycling, let's get it sorted

From 6 April 2024, it will become law for all businesses, charities and public sector organisations to sort their waste for recycling. This includes:

  • Hospitality and tourism - restaurants, bars, pubs, bed and breakfasts, hotels, campsites and caravan parks, holiday accommodation, and licensed premises
  • Showgrounds
  • Entertainment and sports venues including leisure centres
  • Transport - bus stations, railway stations, seaports, airports, and heliports
  • Education - universities, colleges, and schools
  • Heritage buildings
  • Libraries and museums
  • Places of worship
  • Outdoor markets and festivals

The Welsh Government is introducing this law to improve the quality and quantity of how we collect and separate waste: Workplace recycling | GOV.WALES

Further guidance is available to help you improve your current waste collection and ensure your workplace is fully compliant with the new regulations from April 2024: The Business of Recycling Wales Guidance for all workplaces (wrapcymru.org.uk)

In its role as regulator, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) will be responsible for overseeing the separation requirements and the bans on waste going to incineration and landfill. The team at NRW is on hand to help workplaces comply with the new regulations and manage their waste in the right way: Natural Resources Wales / Separated waste collections for workplaces
