Farewell to two great tourism ambassadors

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of two great ambassadors of the Welsh tourism industry.

Jonathan Jones CBE

Jonathan (Jo) Jones was a much-loved, respected friend and colleague, and a true legend to those in the tourism industry.

Jo, brought up in Crymych, Pembrokeshire, led the then Wales Tourist Board (WTB) team as Chief Executive from 1999 - 2006 and then as Welsh Government’s (Visit Wales) Director of Tourism and Marketing from April 2006 - July 2012. From there he became Director of the Welsh Government office, London and retired in August 2013, though continued to be part of the tourism industry as an Independent Tourism Consultant, until the present day.

In 2012 Jo received the CBE in the Queen's Honours List and said at the time, that he accepted the honour on behalf of "everyone who works so hard in the tourism industry in Wales.  Without their support, it would be impossible to achieve what I do".

For those of us in the sector who were lucky to know and work with Jo, in Wales and beyond, we will remember him as not only a consummate professional and ambassador for our country, but as one of the warmest and most genuine of individuals with innate communications skills and a fabulous sense of humour.

Paul Loveluck CBE, JP

Paul was a public servant for over 50 years and a magistrate for 30 years in Cardiff and Montgomeryshire. He was awarded the CBE for services to the tourism industry in Wales and dedicated his life to serving the needs of others in his family, community and country.

Born and brought up in Maesteg, Paul graduated at the University of Wales at Cardiff and joined the Welsh Office in 1969 from the Board of Trade, Whitehall, London.

He was Chief Executive at the Wales Tourist Board from 1984 – 1996 before becoming Chief Executive at the Countryside Council for Wales from 1996 – 2002.  After retiring in 2002, Paul became President of Amgueddfa Cymru / National Museum of Wales from 2002 - 2011 and was a member of the Parliamentary Boundary Commission for Wales from 2011 to 2020.

Both will be greatly missed.

No doubt you will wish to join Welsh Government in sending deepest condolences to the families and friends of Jo Jones and Paul Loveluck.
