The experience makers – skills and recruitment campaign update

Visit Wales continues to work on The Experience Makers campaign to support tourism and hospitality by highlighting career opportunities and encouraging the take-up of vacancies.

Six case study films are now available on Work in hospitality and tourism | Working Wales (gov.wales) (scroll down on the website to see them all); and campaign assets and the toolkit to help businesses to recruit staff, can be downloaded on Assets: EMCP | Visit Wales.

Campaign activity includes –

March Media Wales partnership: An article was featured focussing on chefs and kitchen staff – roles that are in high demand in the industry. Running across WalesOnline, North Wales Live, South Wales Evening Post, Daily Post, and South Wales Echo, this covers the stories of 3 top chefs and an apprenticeship chef and can be viewed on: 'I started out washing dishes': How chefs in Wales kickstarted their careers in the kitchen - Wales Online.

March and April - ‘How to’ series: A series of short, engaging films focussing on some of the skills that can be gained working in key hospitality roles are being shared across the Working Wales social channels.  As well as working with the venues and individuals involved to share via their social media channels, we are targeting key influencers based on audience research to share and seed the content further. Films include -

Paid for social media advertising: Two weeks of adverts are running from 21 March featuring Instagram story polls, reels, Facebook advertising and TikTok and Snapchat adverts – all created from content generated by the Experience Makers campaign from venues around Wales. The latest TikTok advert focusses on the flexibility of a career in hospitality and tourism.  Previous TikTok adverts have focussed on the fun and good vibes of a career in hospitality.  Be sure to join in on social media and share using #theexperiencemakers.

Passion and optimism for hospitality industry at culinary championships

Organised by the Culinary Association of Wales and sponsored by Food and Drink Wales and Welsh Government, The Welsh International Culinary Championships (WICC) took place in February 2022 at Grwp Llandrillo Menai’s campus in Rhos-on-Sea, North Wales after a pandemic enforced absence of two years.

Dalton Weir, sous chef at Cottage Loaf, Llandudno, was announced as the new Junior Chef of Wales. As well as winning the Dragon Trophy, he goes on to the semi-finals of the Craft Guild of Chefs Young National Chef of the Year contest.

Charlotte Latham, apprentice chef at Chartists 1770 at The Trewythen Hotel, Llanidloes, won both the Wales heat of the Riso Gallo Young Risotto Chef of UK and Ireland and the Major International Main Course Challenge. Charlotte, who goes on to represent Wales in the finals of both competitions, was also commis chef to sous chef Matthew Smith in the National Chef of Wales final.

Find out more about the competition, the winners and the work of the Culinary Association of Wales on Our News - Culinary Association of Wales.
