St David’s Day, 1 March: Random Acts of Welshness. Get involved!

St David’s Day on 1 March 2022 is an opportunity to showcase Wales to the world and we’re inviting you to join us.

Gwnewch y pethau bychain - St David famously asked the people of Wales to “do the little things” in life that would have a positive impact on people and our world.

And to celebrate this St David’s Day, Wales will be encouraging people across the world to discover more about the nation with an exciting new social media campaign.

It aims to introduce a global audience to Welsh characters and customs and traditions - ancient and reimagined - and highlight Wales’ strong reputation as a nation of community, caring and kindness.

36 acts of Welshness will be posted in the run up to the big day, with people asked to choose one at random, or create their own, and then share it on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook or Twitter.

Acts include:

  • Sharing some joy with a gift of daffodils to friends, family or total strangers.
  • Learning some Welsh
  • Give a loved one a ‘cwtsh’ – the Welsh word for hug
  • Trying a 21st century take on traditional clog dancing like Bethan Rhiannon of band No Good Boyo
  • Wearing Welsh high fashion such as classic Welsh blanket patterns reimagined in modern clothing
  • Enjoying some new Welsh music
  • Plant a tree - to green up your garden and the world
  • Serve up some fine Welsh food and drink - from leeks to laverbread, cheese to curry half and half!

Find out about this year’s social media campaign, Pethau Bychain – Random Acts of Welshness, and how you can get involved on: Random acts of Welshness | Wales.com. Please also share this with any of your own stakeholders - these could be businesses, groups or organisations in Wales and around the world who can help amplify our content and get involved.

Assets for use across your social media are available in our St David’s Toolkit; join in using #RandomActsofWelshness and #PethauBychain.

Welsh food and drink research

The Welsh Government has commissioned a series of research to better understand the ‘value of Welshness’ to shoppers and visitors to Wales.

Each piece of research demonstrates that shoppers and guests/visitors would like more Welsh food and drink on menus and in retail.

The findings also include that 80% of those asked think it’s important that venues have a good range of welsh drinks and 80% want to see more welsh food and drink included in menus. Key findings and the full research can be found on: VOW infographic.

If you would like to discuss the research further, please contact Buddug.Turner@gov.wales.

The food tourism toolkits are currently being updated, but in the meantime please use existing versions to help you to consider how you can improve your Welsh food and drink offer: Working together | Business Wales (gov.wales).

REMINDER: Smoke-free law changes from 1 March

New smoking laws are being introduced in Wales which affects the tourism industry.

From 1 March 2022, all hotels, guesthouses, inns, hostels and members’ clubs must be smoke-free and will no longer be able to offer designated smoking bedrooms.

All self-contained holiday and temporary accommodation, such as cottages, caravans, chalets and other short term lettings accommodation will also be no smoking. Owners should therefore have prepared for conversion any of their smoking accommodation/ designated smoking bedrooms to smoke-free ready for 1 March 2022 - after this date it will be against the law to smoke in these areas and a fine could be issued.

Further information on how these changes affects the tourism industry can be found on Smoke-free law: guidance on the changes from March 2021 [HTML] | GOV.WALES.

Help build the future of Wales!

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is inviting you to complete a questionnaire about the future of regional development in Wales, and share it with your network, including family, friends, and associates. This initiative forms part of a collaboration between the OECD and the Welsh Government.

By sharing your thoughts about economic, social, environmental and community development challenges and priorities, you can help build the future of Wales and Welsh local communities!

Your responses will provide critical inputs for a vision-setting workshop on regional development with the Welsh Government and other stakeholders including local authorities, private sector, and the third sector etc, facilitated by the OECD. Your perspective will help the Welsh Government and Welsh Local Authorities improve services, enhance social and economic well-being, and increase the quality of life throughout Wales.

Please reserve about 10 minutes to complete the full questionnaire by 9 March 2022 on:Building the Long-term Vision for Regional Development in Wales (oecd.org) (The questionnaire is only available in English).

REMINDER: COVID-19 SAFETY IN WALES

Self-isolation

People in Wales (including visitors) must obey the law in Wales; which is to self-isolate if you test positive for 5 days inclusive starting from the day after you had the test or the day you developed symptoms. And to self-isolate if you are unvaccinated and identified as a close contact.

Our guidance on what you should do over and above the legal requirements is at Self-isolation | GOV.WALES.

Face Coverings

In Wales, from Monday 28 February, the requirement to wear face coverings will be removed from most indoor public places, apart from in retail, public transport and health and care settings.

If the public health conditions continue to improve, the legal requirement to wear face coverings in all remaining settings could be lifted by the end of March.

Information can be found on Face coverings: guidance for public | GOV.WALES.

The next three-weekly review of the coronavirus regulations will be carried out by 3 March, when the remaining measures at alert level zero will be reviewed.
