Wales introduces COVID Pass for events and nightclubs

As of 11 October 2021, people in Wales must now show a COVID Pass or demonstrate their COVID-19 status to enter nightclubs and attend large events.

The introduction of the COVID Pass builds on the measures in place to help to keep Wales safe and open during the pandemic.

The law has changed so all adults over-18 will now need to show an NHS COVID Pass or a negative COVID-19 test to enter certain premises:

  • nightclubs and similar venues
  • indoor, non-seated events for more than 500 people
  • outdoor non-seated events for more than 4,000 people
  • any setting or event with more than 10,000 people in attendance

People who are fully vaccinated in Wales can already download the NHS COVID Pass to securely show and share their vaccine status. It also allows people to show they have had a negative lateral flow test result within the last 48 hours.

The Welsh Government will use the current enforcement regimes for monitoring compliance, this means businesses and events need to ensure their proposed arrangements to comply with the COVID pass regulations are included in their risk assessments, and reasonable measures to ensure compliance.

Read the announcement in full on Gov.Wales.

Businesses who have guests staying with them to attend large events may want to draw their attention to the guidance available on using the NHS Covid Pass on the Welsh Government website.

Businesses can also download and use the NHS COVID Pass Assets from the Welsh Government website.

COVID-19 spot checks could lead to prosecution

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is continuing to carry out spot checks and inspections on all types of businesses, in all areas, to ensure they are working safely to reduce the risk of COVID.

During the spot checks, HSE provides advice and guidance to manage risk and protect workers, customers and visitors. However, where some businesses are not managing this, HSE will take immediate action.

Visit the Business Wales website for more details.

Requirement for all employers to pass on tips to workers

All tips will go to staff under new plans to overhaul tipping practices set out by the UK Government.

Most hospitality workers – many of whom are earning the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage – rely on tipping to top up their income. But research shows that many businesses that add a discretionary service charge onto customer’s bills are keeping part or all of these service charges, instead of passing them onto staff.

The UK Government will make it illegal for employers to withhold tips from workers.

Visit the Business Wales website for more details.

Great Britain tourism survey and day visit survey

The Great Britain Tourism Survey (GBTS) and Great Britain Day Visit Survey (GBDVS) measure the volume and value of domestic overnight tourism trips and domestic day trips taken by residents of Great Britain. The surveys have been temporarily disrupted in 2020 and early 2021 by the COVID-19 pandemic.

An update of these statistics has been published, including a summary of recent changes to the survey method and the types of new information that is being collected. The aim is to start publishing data for 2021 early in 2022, following quality assurances.

ONS travel and tourism statistics consultation

The Office for National Statistics are leading a review of travel and tourism statistics covering inbound, outbound and domestic travel in the UK.

The review covers information collected by the International Passenger Survey, Great Britain Tourism Survey, Great Britain Day visits survey, as well as the opportunity to gather information from new alternative data sources. This work is seeking to gain a comprehensive understanding of user needs and to explore how best they can be met in a changing environment.

They have launched a consultation and are interested in receiving the views of all sectors of the tourism industry in Wales who are users of travel and tourism statistics. You can submit your response to the consultation here

Pembrokeshire unveils its new brand identity

Visit Pembrokeshire has launched its new brand for Pembrokeshire. Designed to build awareness, the new brand will support the Destination Management Organisation’s (DMO) aim to develop tourism in the most responsible and sustainable way possible.

A new logo which accompanies the brand make-over has been inspired by the creative and artistic local essence of Pembrokeshire and reflects the free-spirited nature of the brand personality. The colours echo the changing seasons, and the movement of the sea, the tides and the air has also been represented within the new brand ‘knot’: a nod to the region’s strong Celtic connections.

The new branding is simply ‘Pembrokeshire’ (with ‘visit’ no longer part of the logo), to reflect how the destination provides more than just a drop-in visit – it offers a well-rounded, immersive and life enhancing experience to those who seek it. The purple/grey font of the word ‘Pembrokeshire’ pays homage to the local slate, a natural material, part of the environment, that is visible throughout much of the county.

The logo can be downloaded in English, Welsh and bilingual formats and an uplifting animated video has been created which depicts, key locations and experiences within Pembrokeshire.

Businesses and organisations across Pembrokeshire will be encouraged to engage with the brand using their image library and brand toolkit providing guidance on brand values, messaging, typography and colour palettes.

For further details or to become a member of Visit Pembrokeshire, please visit the Visit Pembrokeshire website.

Message from the First Minister: Support for EU settlement scheme in Wales

"Following my previous open letter to EU (and EEA and Swiss) citizens in Wales I wanted to take another opportunity to reiterate my message of support to those individuals who reside here in Wales and wish to continue to do so.

“Although the deadline for applying to the EU Settlement Scheme has now passed, all those EU citizens who were resident in Wales before 31 December 2020, or any family members who have joined them since, can still make a late application on reasonable grounds. Children of EU citizens can make or have a late application made on their behalf indefinitely.”
