Update on the Additional Learning Needs system 

The Minister for Education has today provided an update on the phased implementation of the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal Act from September 2021. 

COVID-19 Modification of Curriculum and Assessment Requirements for February 2021

Curriculum and assessment requirements will continue to be modified to a reasonable endeavours basis for the month of February 2021.

The Minister for Education has decided to issue a further modification notice providing schools with continued flexibility while responding to the ongoing issues and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Notices to modify curriculum and assessment requirements may only apply for a specified period of time, which must not exceed one month.  The intention is to resume full curriculum and assessment requirements as soon as appropriate and we continue to keep the situation under review.

We are pleased to announce that an updated and improved version of our award-winning online safety tool 360 safe Cymru will be launched in late February.

Flash-based resources: Hwb resources that require Adobe Flash Player is no longer accessible

Support for Adobe Flash Player ended in December 2020 and any relevant classroom resources or files on Hwb that run Flash are no longer accessible. We have identified all Flash-based resources on Hwb and subject specialists will be reviewing them shortly. Resources which are still relevant to the curriculum will be recreated in a different format, where possible. More information on Adobe Flash 

Supporting Service Children in Education (SSCE) Cymru

Through consultation with schools in Wales and members of the SSCE Cymru Network, a suite of resources has been created to help schools and education settings gain an understanding of the experiences and needs of Service children.

National Deaf Children’s Society Cymru: Deaf friendly remote learning checklist for teachers

Deaf learners and learners with a hearing loss can face particular barriers with online learning. This checklist has been developed by the National Deaf Children’s Society and will help teachers to consider whether arrangements for remote learning are accessible for deaf learners/learners who have a hearing loss. 

Kidscape: Anti-bullying Guidance

To support implementation of the statutory guidance Rights, Respect, Equality, we are working with Kidscape to deliver a series of webinars to help develop and update anti-bullying policies and strategies. The training has been developed for the lead governor and staff members who lead on anti-bullying policy within their school.

Health and Safety Executive: Spot checks and inspections at schools in England and Wales

Update on the spot checks and inspections carried out by HSE in primary and secondary schools from September to December 2020.
