First Minister Carwyn Jones launches Metro

An ambitious new era for rail in Wales

An ambitious new era for Wales’ rail has started with the new Wales and borders rail contract.

Officially launching the new rail service at Pontypridd Railway Station, First Minister Carwyn Jones said the service “can be the best passenger rail service in the UK within the next 15 years,” as he travelled on one of their trains.

Led by Transport for Wales with our partners KeolisAmey this will be the very first ‘made in Wales’ rail service, designed and delivered by the Welsh Government.

Watch out for our White Paper

Transport Secretary Ken Skates will soon launch a White Paper setting out proposals to improve public transport across the whole of Wales.

Talking directly to passengers and key industry stakeholders – local authorities, bus and taxi companies and passenger groups – the consultation will seek views on proposed changes to legislation governing how bus services are planned and delivered, together with the licensing of taxis and private hire vehicles (PHVs).

He said:“Our aim is to increase the number of people using public transport and encourage travellers to switch from private car use, reducing pollution and congestion. We want to see more people using public transport to get them where they need and want to be efficiently and on time.”
