Noise and soundscape action plan 2018-2023
The Environment Minister Hannah Blythyn has launched Wales’ new five-year noise and soundscape action plan. This is the Welsh Government’s central noise policy document. It urges public bodies in Wales to focus not only on clamping down on the decibels, but also on creating appropriate soundscapes, meaning the right acoustic environment in the right time and place.
The plan commits to treating noise as an airborne pollutant under the Welsh Government’s Clean Air Programme, recognises the value of tranquil green spaces, and promises to develop new guidance on air quality and soundscape for local planning authorities.
The UK’s Noise Abatement Society has praised the Welsh Government for being the first national government to explicitly embed the requirements of good acoustic design and soundscape management in its noise policy, through the noise and soundscape action plan and Planning Policy Wales edition 10.
